Last week, Anne Curtis posted a picture on Instagram with her dressed in the cutest workout gear for the rain. Raincoats aren’t exactly the most fashionable items in our closets, but Anne seems to pulling it off well. Perhaps it’s her it’s her bob that instantly makes anything look chic? Or it could be the fact that she is Anne Curtisβ€”she could be wearing an old, ratty t-shirt and still look better than the rest of us!

Over here, when the rain comes, it pours, and the first thing that comes to mind when dressing appropriately for the weather is protection against the elements. We tend to dress down and comfortably to keep ourselves warm and to stay dry. We end up prioritizing function over fashion. But if there was anything that we have learned from the athleisure trend, it’s that it’s possible to achieve both in an outfit. Waterproof or water resistant gear can also look quite stylish when you wear them right, so don’t let a bit of rain ruin what could potentially be a really chic ensemble.

Check out the following tips to help you stand out in the rain:

Consider the style of the raincoat

For starters, the easiest way to look cute during a downpour is by selecting cute outerwear. While a standard coat from The North Face will definitely protect you from catching a cold, the appearance of the raincoat is less than inspiring. The shape of a trench coat can help to accentuate your figure. It also doubles up as a regular coat for non rainy days, so you can make the most out of your investment. Quilted, puffy jackets have been spotted on fall and winter runways for the past few years, so those would be another option for you. If you’re looking for something that isn’t too big or puffy, our Hooded Padded Lightweight Jacket is quite thin. It’s perfect for the weather in the Philippines.

Wear bright accessories

The gloomy weather often encourages us to wear darker hues to match our mood. Dark colors are also more practical since rain droplets won’t look as obvious on black pants and navy blue tops. To perk up your outfit, try adding contrast with vibrantly colored accessories. It’s amazing how a bright orange necklace or a neon pink backpack can really perk up your mood on a dreary day. Something else you can opt for is fun rainboots. Whether it’s red or in exciting patterns, waterproof boots can make you look forward to the rain.

Wear your hair in a braid

Unless your locks are quite limp and straight, the humidity often brings out the worst in your hair. Often, women will pull their tresses back into a tight ponytail or bun. But why go for an ordinary hairstyle when you can choose to up your hair game with a braid? Braids are suited for those that experience frizz when there is a hint of moisture in the air, styling your hair without the use of heat. It keeps all your hairs in place, and the best part of a braided do is that it looks just as good wet as it does dry. A braid also results in the perfect beach wave.

Experiment with different kinds of styles, from French and Dutch to fishtail. Even if you aren’t that great at them, there are plenty tutorials online that are suited for all skill levels and take just five minutes of your time. These braids are great when you’re in a rush. Do them during your commute to work or right before your shift starts.

Buy boots that match everything

If you’re not a huge fan of patterned boots, it’s best that you opt for a pair in a solid color. Leopard print may be back in style, but they won’t be as easy to wear as a pair of black or blue rainboots. The problem that some people have with rainboots is the style which can look a lot like what a fisherman would wear. Boots in a neutral tone will work well to blend into your outfit, regardless if you are wearing jeans or leggings. Just make sure that the boots of your choice are comfortable. However, if you really don’t want to be stomping around in boots all day, you can always pack a pair of flats in your bag to switch into once you get to the office.

With all these tips in mind, there’s no reason why you can’t be fashionable in the rain!
