These tints are really easy to use and definitely do not require the skills of world famous beauty vloggers. While they don’t have the same dramatic effect of a contoured face or a bold matte lip, these products do change the game in terms of your daily beauty routine, shaving off valuable minutes of your day.
Though application is simple, there are right and wrong ways to use these tints. Thankfully, makeup blunders with these bottles are still pretty subtle, especially when you compare them with overbearing blush and unevenly lined lipstick. But still, you want the best results possible with these cheek stains.
Let’s go through the tips to make sure you’re using the tints properly.
1. Prime your face and lips beforehand
It may be non-drying, but the most important thing to remember is that the tint is better when it’s worn over other products, meaning your face still needs those base layers. Otherwise, the tint will just enhance your pores, which is something we tend to avoid when putting on makeup, no matter how much or little we’re putting on.
So what do I mean by the base layers? At the very least, gently rub some moisturizer on your face, or use a brush to apply primer on your cheeks (and other places where your pores are evident). Other than minimizing the appearance of your pores, primer and foundation offer extra bit of hydration, in case your skin still dries out from the tint.
If you’re planning on wearing foundation, go for a liquid or cream-based one, as powders won’t blend too well with the liquid tint.
Ideally, your lips should be exfoliated before using the tint, but as long as your lips aren’t chapped, application should be smooth. To prime your lips, use a clear lip balm. Although if you’re looking for a little more color, a tinted lip balm will enhance the pigment of the tint.
2. Dab with a sponge or brush
Yes, you can roll the product directly onto your face and blend the product in with your fingers, but doing so won’t do your pores any good. And if you’ve got foundation on, rubbing the tint vigorously over your base layers could easily destruct the smooth application of the foundation. You need to be gentle on your face, and you do so by using a sponge.
First, you can roll the product on the apples of your cheeks, and then lightly dab with the sponge to blend it out, repeating the same steps if you want more pigment. Because it’s quick-drying, it’s probably best to do one cheek at a time to make sure the level of color is the same on both cheeks, rather than having one more pigmented than the other.
With defined lines of your lips, you’re better off applying the tint with a brush for a precise outline. If you roll the product directly onto your lips, or even use your fingers to dab it on, you might accidentally apply product outside of your lips, which will be slightly more difficult to correct compared to regular lipsticks.
3. Feel free to experiment!
Even though the whole purpose of a lip and cheek tint is to bring out the natural flush in your face, adding pigment onto your lips that makes it look like you had some wine or grape juice, there’s more to the product than just a matte lip. In fact, you can follow the K-beauty trend of ombre lips, building the color in the center and then blending out to the corners. This is another reason why a lip stain brush comes in handy.
Bored of one of the colors? Blend it with other shades! You can do this for both your cheeks and lips.
Or maybe you’re not feeling the matte lip look? Lip balm or chapstick before your lip stain do offer a bit of sheen, but if you want something a little extra, clear gloss can really elevate the color of your chosen tint. Plus, a little gloss never hurt nobody.
