What the fire rooster represents is a fruitful year, full of results and achievements—basically, it’s a time to make your dreams can true, as long as you work hard. The Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival is a time for traditions, taboos and superstitions, and those that come from a Chinese lineage know this better than anyone. Most people understand this holiday to be about family, lion dances, lanterns, Hong Baos (red envelopes) and spring cleaning, but there’s much more to be done around this season.
There are a myriad of rituals and practices to be followed and things that you’re supposed to avoid during the Spring Festival season. For example, all debts have to paid by New Year’s Eve and no money should be lent on New Year’s Day. Dishes like congee or anything with meat shouldn’t be consumed the morning of, since congee symbolizes poverty and the “no meat” rule is out of respect for the Buddhist gods. You’re also supposed to avoid washing your hair and doing your laundry in the first two days of the year. Otherwise, you will wash away all your good fortune.
Something else to keep in mind is the colors that you wear. Black and white traditionally represent mourning, which are the two colors that you should be staying away from. Red is obviously the best color to be wearing during the New Year, as it is the color for luck in China.
