The double denim look has come a long way since the early 2000s, the era of matching celebrity outfits. Why we ever thought that was cute is just astounding. And of course, the winners that take the cake in worst matching denim-on-denim outfits are none other than Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. Although the Beckhams have also sported denim uniforms, theirs were never as questionable as JT and Britney. Admittedly, the pop stars do make for a great coupleโs costumes on Halloween.

Forever making their mark on fashion history of faux pas, theyโre a constant reminder of what not to do with denim. Some are still scarred by their style decisions, veering away from wearing more than one denim item at a time. But fear not, fashionistas. There are dozens of ways to wear denim outfits without committing a fashion crime. Plus, the double denim trend has since improved, thanks to style experts, celeb fashion icons and Instagram models. So donโt discredit denim-on-denim just yet.
Check out our tricks on mixing and matching our denim pieces.
For starters, wear them in different shades.
If you canโt imagine yourself wearing the same colored denim throughout, best to go for different denim washes. Lighter washes are usually better for accentuating assets while darker denim is good for concealing problem areas. But donโt be afraid to switch the shades up. White jeans are quite cute together with a medium blue chambray top.
Make use of your distressed jeans.
For some reason, distressed jeans, skirts, and denim cutoffs lend themselves so well to the double denim trend. If you arenโt a pro at distressing your own bottoms, consider purchasing our Ripped High Waist Skinny Jeans.
Break up the same shade of denim with another color.
The different washes of jeans are the easiest way to wear the material top to bottom. Though if all your denim items are in the same or similar shades, itโs not the end of the world. What you need to do is utilize other pieces in your wardrobe to break up all that material. How about a bright red tank with matching denim jacket and jeans? Denim ensembles like these also make a great backdrop for that pop of color. However, basics such as a white tee will also do the double denim look justice.
If you still arenโt sure how to break up all that denim, wear a belt.
A black belt is simple yet does wonders in sectioning off your denim. That way, your clothes still appear as separates and not a full-on denim outfit like Britneyโs.
Pair your embellished denim jacket with jeans.
Another way to add pizzazz to the Canadian tuxedo is by wearing a fabulous denim jacket. Whether itโs studded, embroidered, or customized with patches, the detail incorporates a different texture into the ensemble. Add some more fun to the getup by wearing an equally bedazzled top or heels. Doing so will make your denim on denim outfit anything but drab.
Be careful when working with acid wash jeans.
Bleached denim clothing poses some challenges, but they arenโt impossible to work with. Just be mindful of the way itโs been washed. For example, jeans with subtle fading should be all right with other denim pieces. However, the โtie dyeโ acid wash may not play well with other jean items. What you can do is pick another denim piece that matches the color of either the bleached part or the original wash. For our Denim High Waist Slit Midi Skirt, choose a chambray crop top or a jean jacket in white.
Donโt forget to accessorize!
Your styling choices are key in pulling off the trend. Ill-fitting or too many accessories mess up the flow of the outfit. Too little accessories give the appearance of too much denim. Find that balance by experimenting with your jewelry, bags and scarves. Statement accessories are a perfect place to start. Besides, how often do you use your leopard print tote hanging in your closet?
And never EVER pull a JT.
