girl in overalls

Thinking back to your childhood, did you ever hate the clothes your mother dressed you in? Whether they were matching outfits with Ate or button-up dresses, we all probably had a least favorite clothing item growing up. And if you were anything like me, that item was overalls. For me back then, these jumpsuits were the most unattractive pieces that existed, not to mention inconvenient. Going to the bathroom was never a good time with overalls. I was so happy when my mom gave up on dressing me in those one-pieces, and judging by what my friends wore at the time, it had seemed like overalls had seen the last of their days.

But with the cyclical nature of fashion, our past nightmares returned to the forefront of the industry. With both fast fashion brands and luxury labels rolling out their versions of the childhood staple, overalls have come back with a vengeance. Surprisingly, we’re all loving it, including me. We can’t deny that it’s an effortless garment that we could all use this season.

It’s funny how opinions can change over time. What we once despised can be reinvented into something quite trendy. It goes to show that nothing ever really goes out of style, although there have been some pretty questionable creations from the last few months that we hope never to see again. But let’s get back to the subject of overalls.

While there’s a certain nostalgia we feel when buckling back into this item, we can’t help but wonder if look rather childish in overalls. Believe it or not, there are plenty of grownup ways to pull off these dungarees. Thus, you can never be too old for these childhood items.

With it being summer (with unbearable temperatures), we’re going to focus on overall shorts, aka shortalls. Here are a few ways to wear them as an adult:

1) Find a pair in an unexpected color

Bored of the plain blue denim look? Opt for a pair in a bright hue, such as turquoise or red. This kind of color pop is the modern twist that’s perfect for this time of year. Plus, it adds a little more personality into your summer wardrobe.

2) Forget the plain white tee

There’s nothing wrong with pairing it with this wardrobe basic, but don’t be afraid to wear your short-style dungarees with other tops. Go for florals or animal prints, or other patternsΒ you might own. Wear them with something feminine, such as a cold shoulder or off-shoulder blouse. Tops with billowy sleeves are also a great pairing. You could also match it with a crop top. In our Beach Holiday Packing List, we also suggested using shortalls as your cover up on the beach. And for non beach days, you can swap out the bikini top with a sports bra or a bra top.

3) Get nautical with stripes

Jeans and stripes have always been a fantastic match for each other. When striped tees are worn with denim overalls instead of regular jeans, the finished outfit has these cute sailor vibe that is an adorable look for the season.

4) Be mature about styling

In order to avoid looking like a toddler, do not finish your shortalls #OOTD with other kiddie accessories. Examples of styling choices to avoid include backpacks, bows and pigtails. Instead, go for sleeker options, such as clutches, gold jewelry and an elegant bun. And if you’re feeling fancy, a blazer and a pair of pumps are also alternatives for a chic upgrade.

5) Flannel around your waist

Plaid with dungarees can make you look like a lumberjack, but flannel around your waist is a casual ensemble you must try this summer. Wear this with a basic tank and some combat boots, and people will be envious of how cool you look in overalls.

6) Denim on denim

Got a sleeveless chambray top lying around? Pair it with a darker wash of jean overalls for some good ol’ denim on denim. Remember that the key here is to wear these two denim items in different washes.

If you don’t have your own overall shorts yet, be sure to grab a pair of Short Style Jumpsuit while it’s still on sale!
