Weβve covered a lot of how-toβs on denim pieces, from finding the best jeans for you to new ways to wear your denim cut-offs. Itβs safe to say that jeans are a crucial part of every womanβs wardrobe, manifesting in denim jackets, chambray shirts and denim skirts. In our last post dedicated to the fabric, we shared our tips on updating the ’90s denim mini, which is perhaps one of the more forgiving jeans trends compared to the rest. Longer jean skirts, on the other hand, are slightly harder to pull off, not to mention more restrictive in terms of movement. Thus, many of us end up fearing longer denim hems and sticking to what we know best.
But there is one celebrity that has embraced the retro style instead of shying away from it. Julia Montes, who is currently in Thailand with her mother, recently posted her #OOTD for the Summer Palace. Featuring a calf-length chambray skirt paired with a black tee, hat and sandals, she makes it look so easy to wear that much denim.
And the truth is, once you get over the fact that it covers more than your denim mini, it is actually that easy to wear a full length jean skirt. As long as you keep the following in mind, there really is no reason to be afraid of this denim style.
Find a skirt with an A-line silhouette
When working with a heavy textile, shape is key. A denim skirt doesnβt hold up well when it comes in a sheath silhouette. What you want to find something with a defined structure, otherwise the denim will look dowdy. A-line silhouettes are flattering on every body type and will never be weighed down by a fabric like denim. These skirts look best when they have a higher waist, similar to our Denim A-Line Empire Waist Midi Skirt.
Opt for a skirt with buttons
Another way to break up all that fabric is by finding a skirt with waist-to-hem buttons. That front button closure is something weβve seen across all hems of denim skirts, adding something extra to your outfit. Wear with a feminine blouse or a wardrobe basic, buttoned skirts are guaranteed to look good with whatever top you choose. Wear it on the weekend or to the office; the outfit options are endless. And if you want to switch it up, undo a couple of buttons to transform it into a front slit skirt.
Pair it with heels
Midi skirts can be overwhelming for our shorter sisters. Longer hems can make us ladies appear stumpy, and one way to counteract is with some heels. Heels will elongate your legs so that your body isnβt entirely consumed by the skirt. Of course, you donβt have to go for the 5-inch stilettos if you arenβt comfortable in them. All you need is a little bit of height to give your legs a little bit of length.
Try it on in a pencil cut
Minis arenβt the only way to look sexy in a denim skirt. Switch up your office pencil skirt with a jean alternative, like our Denim High Waist Slit Midi Skirt. What makes this skirt unique is its acid wash, which is normally only seem on denim pants. But denim pencils in general are suited for those looking to show off their figure, hugging your curves while maintaining a modest hem. And if your workplace is pretty casual, this piece can easily be incorporated into your office wardrobe. Dressy tops and silk button-downs are the perfect match for this kind of skirt. Although you might want to leave the distressed denim for the weekend, as you still want your work ensembles to look polished.
Denim on denim
Most of the time, youβll hear that denim on denim only works when theyβre in different washes. While that remains mostly true, there is one case you can pull off denim in the same color. If you happen to have a crop top that matches your denim midi, wear them together, by all means! Whether it may be white-on-white, all black or dark blue, itβs a summer street style that everyone will want to steal.
