How to Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans for Your Body Type

I’m a firm believer that no matter what your sense of style is, a good pair of denim jeans is essential to the wardrobe. A t-shirt and jeans look is one of the things I personally can’t do without! Denim comes in all different shapes and colors, stretchiness, cuts, etc., making them super easy to mix and match and style for different occasions.

They work well for more approachable, dressed-down outfits but also work as a statement piece for business-casual looks. Plus, there’s just something about denim jeans that make them the ultimate go-to for lazy days where you can’t be bothered to dress up but still want to look cute as heck.

The problem is finding the cut that will flatter our body type the most. All body shapes are beautiful, and we should celebrate our own by giving them a pair of jeans that are extra flattering! Finding the right fit jeans can be a daunting task, but the benefits are oh so rewarding. Once you find the perfect jeans for your body, you’ll have a best friend for life.

Ever wondered why your jeans hug your booty snugly but have a gap at the stomach area? That’s not a problem you have to tolerate, because rest assured, the perfect pair of jeans does exist. It just takes a little digging and the right style to craft the perfect look. The next time you’re out and about shopping, be mindful of the size, silhouette, length, and overall fit of the jeans you’re eyeing.

In this guide, we’ll show you the type of jeans to look for depending on your body type. Read on for all the best tips!

What’s your body type?

You can’t find the right pair of jeans for your body if you have no idea what your shape is in the first place. That pair of jeans you’ve had forever fits fine, sure, and you don’t feel the need to update your wardrobe. But are you doing justice to all your beautiful bodily assets or are you hiding them behind ill-fitted bottoms?

Plus, knowing your shape can help you solve a ton of style-related problems, from the right crop top to the dress with the ideal fit. Denim is just another added benefit.

Different sources will have varying names for different types, but we’ll stick to four major ones here:

1. Pear/Triangle Shape

A pear/triangular type can get away with most slim-fit outfits because they’re endowed with natural curves. You’ll know you have this figure if you’re blessed with a large butt that is appreciably wider than your shoulder area.

2. Hourglass figures

Those with hourglass shapes have the highly-coveted ratio of a large shoulder and bust size, itty-bitty waist, and large hips. Styling for this type isn’t the least bit a problem as everything fits them pretty well, and most tips are geared toward helping them appear taller or more lean.

3. Rectangular/Banana

On the other hand, a rectangular or banana figure is something you’ll most likely spot on a runway model. They have a straight-down appearance and have parallel measurements, often endowed with just a bit more height than most people, or at least the appearance of it. Athletic/toned types can also fit into this style category.

4. Inverted Triangle

Lastly, the inverted triangle type is someone who has a wide shoulder area, more so than their hips. These types look good in girly tops that emphasize stunning collarbones and shoulders.

Knowing your type is a huge part of fashion, and it’s one effective way to dress to impress! Just remember that no matter what your figure may be, there are always tons of styles out there that will flatter you appearance!

Now, how do you find the right pair of denim jeans that fits perfectly? Stick around to get the best results!

Here’s what to wear if you have…

A pear-shape or triangle shape body

Women with this figure are extra blessed in the hip and butt area, but may have a smaller torso and shoulders. If you’re someone with a Kim Kardashian-like body type, then the challenge is perhaps finding a pair of denim jeans that can fit your booty while still hugging the waist and not leaving a dreaded gap.

It’s best to go with stretch denim, as it can hug your hips and curves better. Choosing a body-contouring pair of jeans is also one way to eliminate the appearance of a waist gap, as the fabric will mimic the natural shape of your body. Style it with heels or block boots to make your legs look longer.

You can also go for flared jeans or boot-leg jeans, which, aside from being stylishly retro and photo-op worthy, help your hip area look a little smaller if that’s something you’re conscious about. Be sure to go for pairs that fit your upper legs and flare out at the bottom so your figure is accentuated.

A wide-leg jean can be a hit or miss when it comes to hip-heavy body shapes, so it’s best to stay away from them when you’re out and about.

Straight-leg jeans with longer inseams can also appear flattering on pear-shape or triangular body types, as the hips provide a naturally curvier silhouette.

Lastly, check the back pockets: smaller ones will make your butt appear larger, while larger ones have the opposite effect.

An hourglass figure

People with an hourglass figure have the same sized shoulders and hips but with a small waist. You shouldn’t have to worry much if this sounds like your body shape, as most pairs of jeans probably appear flattering already. In short, you can get away with wearing almost anything because it’ll fit you well enough. But if you want denim clothes that not only fit you but also accentuate your waist and hips, then read on!

You’ve probably already discovered that skinny jeans and high-waisted jeans are a blessing for your body shape. Skinny jeans and high-waisted jeans will look the best on you because they are able to highlight your slim middle area, making your waist appear even smaller. High-rise jeans will emphasize your waistline while skinnies paired with a tucked-in t-shirt allows your body shape to shine through.

You can also go for straight leg jeans, but keep in mind that the perfect jeans are those that hug your hourglass curves a little better. Boyfriend jeans might make you appear shorter, but they may appear flattering to one’s hips if worn in a low-rise fit.

A rectangular or “banana” shape

Women with this shape usually have longer legs and a straight torso from the chest to the hips, their shoulders being around the same width as their hip area. There’s no real definition in their waist, so the challenge is to soften the body shape by adding some definition here and there. Don’t fret if you don’t have ultra-feminine curves, because a rectangular body type is often associated with model-esque figures, so embrace it! Finding a pair of jeans that will fit you perfectly usually isn’t a challenge!

For this body type, you can experiment with different androgynous styles. Boyfriend jeans will fit the best on your slim body while still emphasizing your silhouette. The best part is you can pair it with a simple tight-fitting top and some boots to juxtapose the masculine and feminine elements of the look.

Playing with rises also helps: a low-rise jean will make you appear curvier and accentuate your hip area. On the other hand, high-rise jeans can show off your long legs and cinch in your waist to hide the straight-down shape of your body. Just stay away from mid-rise jeans, because they’re only going to make your body look more square.

Long inseams will likewise look great on you and give the appearance of a neater, more put-together look. Plus, if you’re someone with this body shape, chances are you’re endowed with height, so jeans in general (and of any length) will look wonderful on you.

An inverted triangle figure

Part of having this figure is finding a pair of jeans that will make your hips appear wider. Don’t be afraid to go for bulkier, thicker denim or maybe even wide-leg jeans: aside from being super breathable and effortless, they make your hips appear larger and balance out your shoulder area.

We’d tell you to stay away from skinny jeans, but they’re not entirely out of the picture for women of your figure! Just as long as you choose the right length and cut of these skinny jeans, you can show off your slim legs and appear taller.

Flare-bottom jeans are another godsend. That way, you can elongate your figure while adding some emphasis to your lower half so you don’t look as top-heavy.

We hope this article has given you some insight and good-old jean knowledge! We firmly believe that with the right know-how, the perfect jeans for different body types will no longer be a mystery. No more hiding behind ill-fitting bottoms, because you can emphasize your hips, legs, or butt with the right jeans for your body!
