Girl wearing a denim jacket

Hey everyone! How has your 2017 been so far? The weather has been pretty dreary this January, but despite the rain and the brief appearances of the sun, you gotta love the cooler temperatures. While the high still ranges between the 29 to 31 degrees, most days feel like it’s between 25 to 27. For those who have experienced four seasons in a year, 27 degrees doesn’t seem cool enough to sport cardigans and jackets. But for us Filipinos, that’s the perfect temperature for us to wear our cold weather gear.

Then again, quilted puffy jackets and trench coats may still seem too warm for the current climate (unless you’re headed to Baguio, which is currently below 20 degrees). But the one outerwear piece that can be worn throughout the year is the jean jacket. Much like your jeans and chambray shirts and dresses, a jacket made out of denim is warm enough for the winter but still light enough to wear on chilly summer nights.

The beauty of this garment is that it can be paired with almost anything in your closet. It has the ability to dress down formal, fancy pieces, and looks fabulous with casual outfits. This is the very reason why fashion gurus have named the denim jacket as a wardrobe staple, akin to items like the perfect blue jean and a white button-down shirt. While there are tons of ways to wear your denim jacket, here at Pretty Me, we aim to offer you tips and tricks to upgrade your everyday style. We want you to make the most out of your jean jacket (and this cool weather) to refresh your daily fashion. Here are a few ideas:

1) Over a bikini top

Cloudy days and under 30 degree weather conditions never stopped us from beach getaways and weekends by the pool. Kimonos and coverups are great for the daytime, though you’ll probably want something warmer once the evening rolls in. The denim jacket will protect you from the wind. Keep it unbuttoned so you can show off your bikini and to maintain the beachy theme in your outfit.

2) Denim on denim

This is a territory that many men and women have steered clear of, and for good reason! No one wants to see a repeat of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s matching denim outfits. Looking back at their ensemble posted on US Magazine, they probably were the reason why it was later considered a fashion faux pas. However, the key to pulling off this rather controversial trend is by wearing mismatching denim, as well as incorporate another clothing item made from a different material (and not in blue). One example would be to wear a white tee, dark denim and jean jacket in a lighter wash.

3) Style the jacket

Most of the time when people include a denim jacket into their OOTD, they don’t really think twice about the way the jacket is styled. Feel free to change it up by treating it like a chambray shirtβ€”wear it knotted, buttoned all the way, with folded sleeves, a popped collar, you name it. You can apply more than one of these little changes, depending on the kind of look you are after.

4) Break up an all-black outfit

Black on black is a classic combination that will never go out of style, but sometimes, it can seem a little too dark for your mood. On those days, consider throwing on a denim jacket. It sets a nice contrast from the black without it looking too bright against it.

5) Pair it with leopard print

If you’re having trouble finding ways to wear your leopard print skirt, take cue from our previous post on How to Pull Off Animal Prints and put a jacket on over your tee to break up the pattern.

6) Try it on with a maxi dress or skirt

Floor length casual dresses and skirts are beautiful but all that material can be intimidating to work with. A jean jacket will diversify the silhouette and add a bit more complexity to the outfit. One thing you can try is buttoning up the jacket like a shirt to make it look like a top you’ve chosen to pair with your maxi skirt.
