Makeup waste is another huge problem. While it isn’t essentially the consumer’s problem. Research says a lot of waste comes from overproduction. Being selective with the makeup we buy and where we buy it from can help mitigate the effects.

How to Edit Your Makeup Collection

The fun part is organizing your collection. Whether you have a large stash or a modest supply, organizing your makeup products has numerous benefits, from saving precious getting-ready time to helping you further develop your makeup style.

Below, we share 4 tips and tricks to help you achieve the perfect makeup bag where each product has a purpose. Let’s get to it!

1. Know Your Makeup Must-Haves

Organizing and curating your collection is a highly personal process. It’s all about keeping what is essential to your routine, and the only one who can define what your essentials are is you. For some, brow pencils are must-haves, while others can live without it.

So, before you get to throwing away those non-essentials, make a clear assessment of your product needs. Write it down on a piece of paper, your journal, or even your Notes app. Go over your typical routine and find the products you tend to gravitate towards the most.

Another quick way to determine your routine is simply by checking which products have been barely touched and which ones are the most worn.

2. Treat Your Makeup Like Your Wardrobe

To make the decluttering process easier, one of the tips recommended by makeup artists and beauty experts is to treat your makeup like a wardrobe. In essence, this means categorizing your products into underwear, a.k.a. your base products, staples or essentials, and wildcards which can liven up your look on days when you get bored with your staples.

So, under base products would be your primer, foundation, BB cream, or concealer. Are you someone who uses a full face of foundation, or do you prefer tinted moisturizer? Only keep what really works for you. I personally only keep a small foundation bottle and a jar of concealer for my base.

Your staples are typically lip products, blush, eyeshadow, etc. Since I’m trying to keep a minimalist makeup bag, I absolutely love multi-purpose creams that can be used as a triple-way makeup product for the cheeks, eyes, and lips. Eyeshadow palettes are another area that could always use a bit of decluttering. I know I didn’t need that large 100-color eyeshadow palette.

Finally, your “wildcards” are pieces that elevate your overall look every once in a while. For some, it’s a daring red lip, and for others, it’s multicolored eyeliners. These are products that can help revive your look if you’re feeling a little bored with your typical style. It’s also a great way to keep makeup fun. Often, people misunderstand a curated or minimalist makeup collection as boring or only having essentials, but these wildcard pieces are just as important and make your staples pop even more.

3. Declutter and Donate

Now that you’re done picking out which products can go and which ones can stay, it’s time to find your old products a new home. Before throwing away everything you don’t use, make sure to:

• Check which products are expired
• Check for reusable packaging
• Save the ones that are still usable

So, you’re going to be left with three piles: expired products whose packaging cannot be reused, expired or finished products with reusable packaging, and stuff that isn’t expired and can still be donated.

The first pile can be donated to junk shops or waste recycling initiatives like SM’s Trash to Cash. Those with reusable packaging can be upcycled at home, while usable products you can give to a friend or donation centers.

4. Think Before You (Over) Buy

I know we hate hearing advice like this, but hear me out! Instead of overbuying products that you’ll end up throwing away, think of lapses in your makeup wardrobe that need to be filled. Do you need a better primer? An eyeshadow palette for daytime? By all means, go ahead. Just make sure to be selective when you’re buying these items and always go for quality over quantity so that you end up actually finishing the product you buy.

It’s also best to avoid marketing tactics like huge sales or discounts that force you to buy stuff you don’t need just to meet the minimum qualifying purchase amount.

We’re all skincare and beauty junkies here, and surely, over the years, we’ve amassed a collection of empty skincare bottles. Toners, serums, essences, all these things come in bottles, whether plastic or glass, and really, what do we do with them once they’re all out empty? 

We can admire them and give ourselves a pat on the back for finishing a bottle; after all, not every skincare item gets finished up to the last drop. But after that, we’re left with nothing but an empty container. 

Instead of throwing it all away at once, a good thing to do with our skincare empties is to recycle or repurpose them. They may not have a purpose anymore in being a skincare container, but they can still be recycled. 

We’ve listed down a couple of places where you can donate your empty skincare bottles to be recycled. Save your skin and the earth at the same time! 

Where can I donate my empties?

Got several or maybe a whole army of empty bottles? Worry not, for here are a couple of places that are willing to take them! Five of them accept any bottle regardless of brand, while two places are brand-specific. Check them out! 

Junk Shop

No, this isn’t a brand or anything of the sort. We’re talking about your local neighborhood junk shops here. You’ve probably driven by one of these places or heard someone on the streets calling “Plastik, dyaryo, bote!” Junk shop boys, and junk shops, buy and collect scrap for very cheap. Some junk shops only take certain materials such as metal or paper, but a lot out there take bottles and other things as well. If you’ve accumulated a whole ton of empty skincare bottles, you can try your luck at your nearest junk shop.

Plastics by Manila Automat

If you have numerous plastic bottles of skincare empties, you may want to try to donate it to Plastics by Manila Automat. This startup is a small studio based in Katipunan, Quezon City, and they create homewares from recycled plastics. The upcycled homewares range from coasters, bowls, candle holders, planters, and a whole lot more. They can even create stools completely made of recycled plastics! The studio accepts HDPE2 and PP5 plastics as donations. To donate, simply message them on Instagram to work out details and a dropoff schedule.

Green Haven Scrap Materials Trading

If you have skincare and beauty empties that are glass bottles, Green Haven Scrap Materials Trading will accept them from you. Aside from glass bottles, Green Haven also collects juice boxes, milk boxes, PET bottles, newspaper, and paper scrap to recycle. The organization regularly announces pick-up dates in certain areas for recyclables; the only thing you have to do is to thoroughly clean and rinse your bottles and have them ready for pick-up. 

Trash to Cash by SM Supermalls

Looking to earn a little money while recycling? Mall giant SM Supermalls has a Trash to Cash Recycling Market initiative that may be right up your alley! The project was born as SM Supermalls aim to “educate the community about the importance of responsible solid waste management.” Anyone, from customers to mall tenants, can bring their recyclables in designated Trash to Cash areas in select SM malls. 

The recycling market is held every first Friday and Saturday of the month in all SM malls nationwide, except for SM Makati and SM Cubao. They accept plastic and PET bottles, tin and aluminum cans, cartons, paper products, as well as metal cookware and kitchen items. To know their schedule, you can check out the SM Supermalls website.

Humble Sustainability

Recently decluttered your home and found that you have a lot of items that can still be reused, along with your skincare empties? Humble Sustainability is an initiative that may be able to help you out! In an effort to help reduce clutter in homes, Humble Sustainability believes in circular living, a mindset in which items no longer used by others can be brought back into circularity through recycling or upcycling.

Humble accepts any and all items, from plastic or glass bottles, all the way to worn-out clothes, toys, and even an old non-working television set! All items that Humble takes in will be reused, recycled, or upcycled with the help or sustainability partners. To donate to Humble, simply book a collection through their Instagram account and they’ll come to your house to collect your items for free. 

Lush

Popular beauty brand Lush is known for its cruelty-free, handmade, and vegetarian-friendly products. Did you know that Lush also has a sustainable packaging initiative? If you’ve accumulated five or more empty tubs of Lush products, you can bring them to any nearby Lush store and they’ll accept your empties to recycle. In return, you’ll receive a free face mask from Lush. Pretty sweet deal, if you ask us.

Innisfree

Korean brand Innisfree is popular for their eco-friendly and natural products, ranging from skincare to cosmetics. They’re quite affordable, too. Innisfree has an eco-recycling program where you can drop off empty Innisfree skincare containers in a box found inside their stores. This program is also being done in Korea and in all their branches in other countries. The Innisfree empties will then be sent to Innisfree facilities in Korea to be recycled or upcycled.

What Are the Steps to Organizing My Closet?

If you’re going to declutter your wardrobe for good, then you need to do it right! Organizing our closets is something we often want to do, but keep putting off. The hardest part of these decisions is sometimes our follow-through. 

Before things get out of hand and you have stacks of clothes on the floor due to lack of space for everything you own, it’s time to make some tough decisions. Ask yourself these questions: what things do I need to keep, and what unnecessary things should I throw away?

Now that you’ve decided to take control and declutter all the items in your wardrobe, these next few steps are going to help you avoid past mistakes. Before getting rid of unneeded items once and for all, keep these things in mind:

Step 1: Set a schedule.

If there’s anything you must do to commit to this task, it’s jot it down on your calendar! One of the biggest mistakes people can make is leaving the job out to chance. Instead of waiting for a free day or waiting for the inspiration to strike, take things into your control and intentionally dedicate a few days just for getting rid of unnecessary items. Plenty of busy women out there forget to do this step, and it gets lost in a sea of work, coffee runs, errands, or quality time with the husband and kids.

Personally, I would clear at least 2 days of my schedule — usually a weekend — and dedicate it to the decluttering process. I find that I get tired and don’t finish if I attempt to do it all in a single day. People have different preferences, but sticking to a schedule can help no matter who you are.

You can also try out some organization apps to make decluttering extra easy! 

Step 2: Go section by section.

If you’ve got a large closet and don’t know where to start the decluttering process, don’t just dive in headfirst into your wardrobe. Categorize! Start with tops, then bottoms, then dresses, the outwear, and so on. Shoes and accessories get their own time as well. Breaking down the mammoth job of “decluttering” into bite-sized tasks helps to prepare us mentally, too. 

When taking on each section, I make sure to bring the clothes completely out of the closet or drawers and onto a clean floor. Then I create only two piles: to keep and to give away. You may add one for clothes that need to be altered and repaired, but only do so if you can repair them right away, otherwise they’ll add up to the clutter in your home space. I usually search for extra garbage bags to store the to give/to sell pile. 

Step 3: Keep a donation box handy.

Know a local donation center? Perhaps your younger siblings have a rummage sale at school? We Filipinas have been taught at a young age never to throw away clothes and instead pass them onto our relatives who might need them more.

To keep your closet clutter-free for the long haul, have a box on standby in case you decide an item of clothing no longer sparks joy. That way, you’ll be able to separate it from the rest of the clothes you wear regularly. Once your box is filled up, you can give those pre-loved clothes a second home.

Step 4: Set a deadline.

Don’t get carried away trying to declutter your closet and saying goodbye to things with sentimental value forever. If you don’t set a deadline, you might find yourself procrastinating until you forget about the task altogether. Stick to your schedule and try to do as much as you can in that set time.

Now that you’re all ready to get your hands dirty (metaphorically, of course, unless there are a few dust bunnies hiding in that wardrobe), we’re ready to move on to step 5, which is pretty much the bulk of the process! Here are a few tips to keep in mind when decluttering clothes.

Break It Down

Like we mentioned above, it helps to break down one large task into bite-sized ones. When you’re decluttering clothes, don’t just go willy-nilly on everything in your closet.

One way to do this is to separate your pieces by category: pang-alis tops, bottoms, and dresses all get their own time. I always go by this method, starting with one place then moving on to different parts of the wardrobe. Once that first set of items has been separated into the keep/don’t keep pile, I can proceed to the pambahay part of my closet, which includes the loose shorts, dasters, oversized t-shirts, etc. 

On that note, it helps to have only two categories of items: to keep or not to keep. Adding a “to alter” pile is only good if you can repair those clothes ASAP. 

When you declutter your wardrobe, don’t forget to declutter your underwear drawers, too. Unless we’re constantly checking in on everything there, chances are, our drawers are full of undies that we’ve been using for years and aren’t exactly in the best condition! 

In this case, we can throw away the ones that are a little worn down. Wearing only the best pairs of underwear and lingerie everyday can boost our confidence. Plus, bralettes and lacey corset tops are all the rage nowadays, making a strong case for underwear that can be worn as outerwear!

Keep Clothes That Actually Fit

The question now becomes, how do I know which clothes to keep and which pieces to get rid of? One factor to look at is how well they fit you. I used to have all too many items of clothing that were beautiful, but required a few strategically-placed safety pins just to be wearable. 

Even though I did wear those items constantly, it eventually became a chore to have to style them just so they fit. Part of the process is being merciless with what you’re going to keep or not. So don’t compromise! One of the biggest mistakes you could make when decluttering is keeping something just because you can tweak it a bit. If it’s not an instant and obvious fit, you’re better off without it, period. 

Keep Comfortable Fabrics

The next thing to consider is how wearable a certain item of clothing is. High-quality fabric is often more comfortable, shares fashion Youtuber bestdressed in her video below. Comfortable and more durable fabric is also going to last longer, making these pieces of clothing more sustainable. If you’ve got a few expensive summer dresses or boujee jeans, keep them, because they’re the ones that will withstand a lot of wear!

Keep Only What You Wear

This one seems pretty obvious, but only keep the items you actually wear. Whether that’s on a daily basis, weekly, or once a month, if you find yourself wearing an item often, then it deserves to go in the keep pile. 

We don’t mean the clothes that you want to wear but never actually have. I find this to be the hardest part, because I did also have a few clothes that I’ve always wanted to wear but never had the occasion to: one deep blue ankle-length skirt I bought three years ago, a frilly champagne-colored satin number with roses trailing down the side perfect for a 2000’s-era prom night, and a few oversized leather blazers that were beautiful but altogether too hot for the country’s climate. 

All these, despite starring in my most fashionable OOTD fantasies, never even saw the light of day. But because the clutter-free process requires being a little ruthless, I had to eventually let these babies go. If you have those, too, then it’s best to sell them or give them away no matter how difficult it may be.

Try the Backwards Hanger Method

To piggyback off of the previous tip, turning your hangers around makes tracking what you wear and don’t wear a lot easier. Melissa from the minimalist lifestyle blog Simple Lionheart Life swears by this trick in a blog post she shared a while back. 

Do this by turning all your hangers around, then turning them back once you take out a item of clothing. By doing so, you’ll have a clear visual of which clothes you never take out of the closet and which ones you do. Set 3 to 6 months to observe your wardrobe, then declutter accordingly.

Keep What’s Versatile

Another widely-shared tip for clearing out closet space is keeping only the pieces of clothing that can be worn multiple ways and for every season. Some examples include a trusty white t-shirt, your go-to denim jeans, or plain-colored tops. These basics are essentials in any closet. They can be styled in plenty of ways and also make up the foundation of what’s called a capsule wardrobe. 

Unsure about a certain article of clothing? Don’t hesitate to try the item on and match it with a few different pieces to see what works. If it effortlessly links to or complements other items in your closet and you see yourself wearing it often, then keep it. If it doesn’t, it has to go.

Know Your Style

Part of cutting down your wardrobe is knowing what suits your aesthetic and what doesn’t. Although it’s a great idea to have a versatile wardrobe that has something for every occasion and every category, it’s even better to stick to the pieces we know we’re going to love and wear for a long time, many times. Any items that we’ve outgrown or no longer suit our current style should go. 

Alter and Trade

Since we’re all for sustainability, it’s a given that getting rid of clothes doesn’t mean throwing them away. But if you don’t know any donation centers, or relatives who are looking for new clothes, a great way to declutter your wardrobe is by repurposing old clothes or trading with a friend.

Did you find some stuff that was too good to give away, but are too out of shape to be an instant keeper? Alter them! While the alter category is optional, it does help breathe new life into clothes that are sitting in between the keep/give away piles.

It’s great to have a sewing machine on hand, but our tip is to only keep anything that can be repaired by hand. That way, you don’t have to make complicated alterations to, say, a large dress or a piece of clothing that’s too small. If the thing is going to take some time and hardcore sewing to alter, then it’s better to give that stuff away to a friend or someone else who might wear it better.

Make Decluttering a Habit

Now that all the clothes you need and don’t need are in their rightful place, you’re all set for the final step of decluttering: staying organized. This is a more holistic approach and requires a habit change, but it’s a habit that can change your life for the better. 

Make it a point to keep your closet organized and easier to declutter. You can organize your closet the way you like, whether it’s through a color code, sorting by season, or purpose. An excellent tip is to keep everything in a designated place, so you don’t have to spend hours in search of that single coat or those pair of shoes.

The point is to regularly check in on the stuff in your closet and assess if you still want to keep them. This can apply to other items around your home, too! Overall, keeping your environment clutter-free shouldn’t just be a one-time event. It takes time and practice, but the benefits are worth it.

You can also add multiple closets, dividing your clothes by season, occasion, attire, whatever you like.

It’s so simple to use and navigate, and probably the best part of it is that it’s free, which is music to anyone who avoids paying for apps like the plague. Because it’s free, you should be aware that it doesn’t have any of the fancier functions that other apps might have, but Closet+ does have all the basic features needed to catalog all your wardrobe items and plan your future outfits.

GlamOutfit

If you like getting the opinions of others before deciding on a final look, then this is the app for you. Almost like having your friends over helping you outfit plan, GlamOutfit is the virtual personal stylist you never knew you needed. First, you have to upload pics of all your pieces into your digital closet, and one of the great features of the app is that you can easily remove the background of the clothes, so you don’t have to stress about the perfect flatlay when snapping pics. When uploading the pics, you can tag them with keywords and hashtags to make each item easier to search for later on.

Once you’ve uploaded everything, you can plan your fashion calendar, saving your favorite looks in your Lookbook. And on days you need a little extra help figuring out what to wear to your friend’s bridal shower or your board meeting, you can request to be styled based on your clothes, or search for style inspo based on your body type or similar vibe.

Stylebook

One of the most highly recommended apps by fashion media outlets, Stylebook is has got so much more to offer than closet planning. A smart closet, if you will, Stylebook analyzes how often you wear certain pieces and outfits, allowing you to see which items need more love, or need to be sold or donated. The “Least Worn” category also helps you figure out your shopping mistakes, as you learn what trends and patterns really don’t belong in your personal style, as attractive as the pieces were when you first bought them. There are also a bunch of other stats included so that you maximize every piece you’ve got in your possession, including accessories.

Although it doesn’t have that personal stylist feature like GlamOutfit does, Stylebook does allow you to browse for inspiration for future ensembles or your next shopping trip. Another extra is the travel packing list, so that you can keep track of your vacation outfits without over- or under-packing.

Like the previous app, Stylebook is a paid app, but so worth it if you are a huge fan of virtual closet organizing and planning.

Which app will you be experimenting with?

Some people are amazing at buying gifts. Others, not so much. For me, the best kinds of presents are the ones attached to good memories, or with homemade touches (aka homemade gifts). Alas, not everyone is a mind reader, creative, or sadly, even willing to put that much thought or effort into your present. Now, writing one is not as straightforward as one would think. You never want to go to crazy and hand out pages upon pages worth of ideas; on the flip side, you also don’t want to leave your friends and family with too few options. Additionally, you can’t fill up your wish list with luxury items that the majority of your loved ones cannot afford. There needs to be some balance.

How to make your holiday wish list

List down everything your heart desires, then eliminate

At this stage, you can include absolutely everything you have been wanting or would like, and if that list seems extremely long, no worries, as you’ll be eliminating things later. What you don’t want to is go looking for items to add to your list, since it’ll just make the process of elimination that much harder.

Once you’ve got that master list, it’s time to start crossing things out. If the list is really long, chances are you’ve doubled up on items. Also, having this long list will help you figure out which items you can actually buy for yourself instead of making others buy it for you. For example, it’s probably best to cross “lingerie” or “new underwear” since not everyone knows your size or the style of intimates you go for. Also, it’s pretty awkward asking your family to buy underwear for you, don’t you think?

Base your list on personal goals

If you’re not even sure where to start for your list, this is a good guideline for you. It’s that time of year when people are starting to think of New Year’s resolutions, so why not create a wish list that’s based on those goals? For example, if you want to finally lose some weight and live a healthier lifestyle, some items to include in your list are cute workout clothes and running shoes, a yoga mat or other gear, and maybe even a gym membership. Make sure your list is a mix of luxury items and affordable goods

If you’re the oldest kid in the family and the only one with a job, it doesn’t make sense to fill your list up with a bunch of expensive items that you’ll probably never get (unless you buy them yourself). While it is reasonable to include a couple of luxury items (after all, it is a wish list), you can’t expect your studying/unemployed siblings to pull their savings together and get you the iPhone XS Max. Instead, have items in there at varying price points, so that there are potential gifts in there that would suit every kind of budget.

You might also want to include the price range of all your items to give your loved ones an idea of how much they’ll need to spend.

Include photos for references

I don’t know about you, but I don’t know how many times I’ve looked at my dad’s list and wondered what he actually wanted to say. Someone please explain to me what a Bluetooth speaker headset is. 

You can put as many details in your list as you can, from shoe sizes to brands, but it’s always best to be specific. Photos are a great way to show your loved ones what exactly it is that you want in case they miss all the extra details in your list. Additionally, having a photo reference will help others deviate less from what you’ve asked for.
