Whether you’re a full-face glam queen or a minimalist gal, the one feature on your face that you should always maintain are your eyebrows. Kilay is life, after all.
For those that have biweekly brow appointments, maintenance is never an issue since someone else is taking care of them. But for those that have a tighter budget, or simply don’t like having their brows done, there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to grooming. Believe it or not, good brows are not just about plucking the strays.
Here’s how to take good care of your eyebrows:
Tip #1: Tweeze or wax after your shower
A warm shower opens up your pores, making it easier and less painful (hopefully!) to pull the hairs out. This is because your follicles are softer. Plus, your skin is less likely to be irritated after hair removal.
It also helps to exfoliate in the shower to help open up any clogged pores and get rid of ingrown hairs. So while you’re washing your face with your favorite facial scrub, be sure to get the eyebrows as well.
Tip #2: Fill in your brows with pencil as a guide for plucking
How many times have you plucked more than you needed? To make sure you don’t overdo it with the tweezers, fill in your brows with your chosen brow product. Once filled in, you’ll be able to see strays to pluck, and what hairs to leave alone. Think of makeup as a guide or something like a stencil.
Tip #3: Tweeze at the base of the hair
When plucking your brows, pull from the base of the hair in the same direction as the growth, pulling out the follicle so as to avoid ingrown hair. Just be careful not to go too close to your skin. Not only will it be super painful, but you might also rip the skin open, exposing your pore to dirt which can also cause an ingrown hair or irritation.
Tip #4: Let your skin rest after tweezing
With all that plucking, it’s natural for your skin to get a little red with slight swelling. It’s not a cause of concern, it’s just a matter of letting your skin rest before applying products or anything. Because your skin is a little vulnerable after tweezing, it’s best to let it recover for an hour or two, not exposing it to sunlight or applying any products.
Tip #5: Over plucked? Use castor oil
Wishing you didn’t over pluck back in the late 2000s? If your eyebrows have suffered through that crazy thin phase, consider using caster oil to boost hair growth. Massage a bit of oil on your brows as part of your nightly beauty routine, after washing your face. You can use your fingers or a clean disposable mascara brush.
For an extra conditioning and growth stimulating boost, feel free to mix vitamin E oil with the castor oil.
Tip #6: Switch between a magnifying and regular mirror while plucking
Another way to avoid over tweezing is by using a dual-sided mirror. While the magnified side is great for revealing all the tiny hairs that you probably would have missed otherwise, you’re more likely to tweeze more than you need. Use the regular side to get a fuller view of your brows and make sure you’re not sacrificing your shape when plucking the smaller hairs.
Tip #7: Don’t forget to trim
Grooming isn’t just about getting rid of hair. It’s also about trimming some of the hairs to prevent the brows from getting overly bushy. To trim them properly, you’ll need a Spoolie brush (a brush that you would normally use to brush your brows) and small facial scissors. Brush your brows upwards and trim the hairs that extend above the brow shape. You can trim the hairs little by little so that you avoid making a bigger chop than necessary.
