What would you say is the most important item in your makeup collection?
For me, I’d say translucent powder. Now, I’m not saying I can live without concealer and mascara, but loose powders definitely do more for me than any other product in my vanity.
How is that possible that a colorless powder can offer more bang for your buck than a concealer, which covers up your blemishes, primes your eyes for eyeshadow, and even works as a matte highlighter?
As it turns out, there’s a lot more you can do with your translucent powder. Much more than you think.
So, how do you make the most out of this product, you ask? Let’s count the ways:
1. Use it as your foundation
On days you don’t feel like caking on lots of products, or if you’re having a particularly good skin day, use it as your powder foundation. For minimal makeup looks, dab concealer on your blemishes and under eyes, then apply powder all over your face to set the concealer, as well as mattefy your complexion. The powder will also soak up the oils so your face stays fresh all day.
2. Use it for baking and highlighting
The key to making your concealer last all day is, you guessed it, setting it with translucent powder. If you’ve got dark circles, packing loose powder on your under eyes (otherwise known as baking) will really brighten and lift your face. If you’re going for the contoured look, translucent powder works really to chisel out those cheekbones. You can also strategically place the powder on other high points to further highlight your face.
3. Use it to set your eyeshadow primer
Did you know that your eyelids can get oily as well? Oily lids make it incredibly difficult to apply eyeliner and eyeshadow, and the way around this is to use concealer to prime your lids, then set with translucent powder. Doing so will increase the longevity of your makeup, as well as make colors more pigmented so you can get the most out of your eyeshadow looks.
4. Use it to catch eyeshadow fallout
Everyone has their own order when it comes to doing their makeup. For those that prefer to do their foundation and concealer before their eye makeup, one way to protect your under eyes from fallout is by patting on some loose powder. In fact, you could bake while you’re blending your shadows, killing two birds with one stone.
5. Use it as a final setting powder
Of course, one of the most obvious functions of translucent powder is setting your finished look. Not only does it prevent smudging by keeping everything in tact, it also lengthens the wear of your makeup. So don’t worry if you don’t have any fancy setting spray or MAC Fix Plus. Loose powders work well on their own to set your makeup, and they soak up oil throughout the day so you don’t have to think about the possibility of your face melting off as you sweat.
6. Use it to prevent runny eyeliner
Afraid that your eyeliner will smudge throughout the day? One thing you can do to ensure you don’t end up with raccoon eyes is by applying some translucent powder with a thin brush on your liner. You’ll also need to apply some powder on your lower lash line so the eyeliner doesn’t transfer.
7. Use it to plump up eyelashes
Want to thicken up those lashes? Instead of using way too many coats of mascara, apply your first coat and then dust some loose powder using an eyeshadow brush. When it’s dry, apply another coat of mascara. Remember, the powder layer doesn’t need to be thick, so remember to tap extra product off the brush so the process is less messy.
8. Use it to make lipstick last longer
Just as translucent powder can set your eyes and face, you can also set your lips. What the powder does is create a matte effect on lipsticks. Plus, it decreases your chance of having to reapply later in the day. Once you’ve applied your lipstick, place a thin layer of tissue on top, then dust some powder on there. You’ll get just enough product passing through the tissue to set your lips.
