Diode lasers are a popular choice for hair removal in the Philippines, but they come with risks like burns, pigmentation changes, and skin irritation. Learn what to expect before starting treatment.

Diode lasers have become one of the most popular options for hair removal in the Philippines. Clinics often promote them as safe, effective, and relatively painless compared to older methods. While the technology does offer many benefits, it’s important to know that risks still exist. Understanding these helps you make an informed decision before booking your first session.

Skin Irritation and Redness

One of the most common side effects is skin irritation. After a session, you may notice redness, swelling, or a warm sensation in the treated area. This usually subsides within a few hours, but for people with sensitive skin, irritation can last longer. Using a soothing gel or aloe vera can help ease discomfort.

Burns and Blisters

If the diode laser is not adjusted properly for your skin type or the therapist is inexperienced, burns and blisters may occur. These are rare but possible risks, especially for individuals with darker skin tones. It’s important to choose a clinic with trained staff and calibrated machines to reduce the chances of injury.

Pigmentation Changes

Diode laser treatments can sometimes cause hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (light spots). Filipinos, with their naturally varying skin tones, should be particularly cautious. Proper patch testing before a full session and following post-care instructions are crucial to avoid long-term discoloration.

Eye Injury Risk

Laser devices can be harmful to the eyes. Protective eyewear is always provided during treatments, and it’s essential to keep it on throughout the session. Even brief exposure to the laser light without protection can cause serious damage.

Risk of Infection

Though uncommon, infections can happen if the treated skin is not cared for properly afterward. Open pores and irritated follicles may be vulnerable to bacteria. Keeping the area clean and avoiding activities that cause sweating, like heavy exercise, right after treatment can help lower the risk.

Temporary Discomfort

During the session, you might feel tingling or mild pain similar to the snap of a rubber band. While this discomfort is usually manageable, it can be more noticeable in sensitive areas of the body. Some clinics offer numbing cream, which can reduce the sensation.

Not Suitable for Everyone

Diode lasers are not recommended for pregnant women, individuals with certain skin conditions, or those taking medication that increases light sensitivity. A proper consultation before starting treatment ensures that the procedure is safe for you.

Final Thoughts

A diode laser can be a convenient and long-lasting solution for hair removal, but it isn’t without risks. By choosing a reputable clinic in the Philippines, following safety protocols, and caring for your skin after each session, you can reduce the likelihood of complications. Always remember: informed decisions lead to safer results.

Hot wax, cold wax, and sugaring are popular hair removal methods in the Philippines. Each has unique benefits for different skin types and lifestyles, from long-lasting smoothness to natural ingredients.

Hair removal methods can feel overwhelming with so many options available. In the Philippines, waxing remains a popular choice, but not all waxing techniques are the same. Hot wax, cold wax, and sugaring each come with their own pros, cons, and best-fit situations. Understanding the differences will help you pick the method that works best for your skin type, budget, and lifestyle.

What is Hot Wax?

Hot wax involves melting wax and applying it directly to the skin. As it cools and hardens, it traps hair, which is then pulled away from the root.

Benefits of Hot Wax

Effective at removing coarse or thick hair

Suitable for sensitive areas like underarms and bikini line

Leaves smoother results that can last up to four weeks

Drawbacks of Hot Wax

Can be messy and time-consuming

Requires heating equipment

May cause minor burns if applied too hot

What is Cold Wax?

Cold wax is pre-applied on strips or comes ready to spread directly from a container. No heating is required, making it easier for beginners.

Benefits of Cold Wax

Quick and convenient for home use

Less messy compared to hot wax

Easily available in local stores and online shops in the Philippines

Drawbacks of Cold Wax

Less effective on coarse hair

May require multiple applications for clean results

Can cause redness or irritation for those with sensitive skin

What is Sugaring?

Sugaring uses a natural paste made from sugar, water, and lemon juice. The paste is applied to the skin and then flicked off, pulling hair from the root.

Benefits of Sugaring

Made from natural, hypoallergenic ingredients

Less painful for many compared to traditional wax

Easier clean-up since the paste dissolves in water

Gentle on sensitive skin

Drawbacks of Sugaring

Can be tricky to master at home

Less available in stores compared to wax products

May not work as well on very short or coarse hair

Which Method Lasts the Longest?

Hot wax: usually 3 to 4 weeks

Cold wax: around 2 to 3 weeks

Sugaring: 3 to 4 weeks, depending on hair growth

Longevity also depends on hair thickness, body area, and individual growth rates.

Which Method is Best for Sensitive Skin?

For those with sensitive skin, sugaring is often the gentlest option because it relies on natural ingredients like sugar, water, and lemon juice instead of synthetic chemicals. Many people find it less irritating and easier to tolerate, especially in delicate areas.

Hot wax can also be a good choice for sensitive zones such as the underarms or bikini line, but it does carry the risk of burns if applied too hot or removed incorrectly. Cold wax, on the other hand, is less ideal for sensitive skin since it often requires repeated applications, which can increase redness and irritation.

Cost Comparison in the Philippines

Hot wax: salon sessions cost more but are highly effective

Cold wax: affordable strips start at under PHP 100 in supermarkets

Sugaring: slightly pricier but valued for its natural ingredients and comfort

Tips Before Waxing or Sugaring

Exfoliate 24 hours before to reduce ingrown hairs

Avoid sun exposure right after hair removal

Do a patch test to check for irritation

Moisturize regularly to keep skin soft and smooth

What We Think of Skin Station’s Full Legs Diode

Getting rid of unwanted hair on your legs can be a hassle and time-consuming, especially if it’s not something you’re particularly fond of.

Shaving and waxing are a few of the methods to try, but they are quite painful. For example, the hot, jagged edges of your razor will burn and cause ingrown hairs, leaving you with painful razor bumps. This painful process can take a toll as you may have to deal with redness, swelling, and clogged pores for at least a week.

Apart from the painful waxing and shaving, one of the best hair removal methods I know about is laser treatment. Laser hair removal may actually work better than shaving and waxing combined, as it is able to safely remove all unwanted hair in one session.

Wondering if laser hair removal for legs is for you? We’ve tried Skin Station’s Full Legs Diode to find out if it can prevent future hair growth, which can start to feel like a really good idea.

What Should You Prepare

If you would like to try Skin Station’s Full Legs Diode, here are some of the things to prepare before your session:

Once you have decided to remove your hair through laser treatment, you should not pluck or wax it at least one month prior to the treatment.

Aside from self-tanning products, you should also avoid unnecessary sun exposure on areas to be treated, one month before and after treatment.

Do not apply Retinol or Retinoic acid-containing creams and lotions.

Do not use peeling agents or diamond peel one week before your procedure.

My Full Legs Diode Experience

I went to Skin Station’s branch in Quezon City to try out their Full Legs Diode. The staff directed me to a room where the session will be done.

A few minutes after I wore the cover-up and laid down, the laser technician entered the room. They took photos of my legs before starting the procedure. At first, it felt awkward, but the technician assured me that they will use the photos only for reference.

The technician cleaned my legs using a cleanser, sponge, and water. They shaved my unnecessary hair before the cold gel was applied to the area. This part was a bit surprising for me since I did not even shave my legs before coming here.

It was quite painful, especially since this is my first time having hair on my legs shaved. The whole shaving experience was bearable and the attendant was assuring me that this is really the usual process. I have little pain tolerance, so the gel application helped to numb my skin.

After that, the laser was then applied to the skin in motion, selectively heating the melanin in the hair follicle, while keeping the rest of the skin unharmed. After several in-motions, the gel was wiped off, and that concluded one session.

After the diode laser, the laser technician applied the Infladerm, which is their anti-inflammatory cream. They asked me to buy this product since it is recommended to be applied for three days after each session.

Is Skin Station’s Full Legs Diode Worth It?

Definitely yes! I would still go for another try and have my legs lasered. With this, I will definitely continue my sessions since I was amazed by all the hair falling off of my skin.

The hair growth in my legs has considerably decreased even after only one session. My fingertips can easily pluck the thin, growing hairs. Although laser hair removal doesn’t directly whiten the skin, it is believed that decreased hair growth will assist in lightening the skin by decreasing the follicles that sprout and create itching and chicken skin.

After a few weeks, I notice neat-looking legs, which boosted my confidence in wearing skirts more often.

Final Note

I am not really a fan of removing hair on my legs. Since my leg hair is not that prominent, I am not that concerned about it. However, Skin Station’s Full Legs Diode changed my perspective on having hair-free legs. I noticed an immediate change and the laser diode made my legs whiter.

Performing laser diode on the legs may take a lot of time because of the huge areas to be covered, but it is worth the wait.

People have been curious about everything related to all things beauty. With growing numbers of people experimenting with various hair removal methods, Brazilian wax is getting a lot of attention.

Despite its popularity as a hair removal technique, a Brazilian wax isn’t exactly a standard dinner-table topic. If you’re someone who’s been curious about Brazilian waxing, this one’s for you!

What is Brazilian Wax?

Brazilian refers to a full-blown waxing down there. A Brazilian wax removes hair all throughout your bikini area, including those between your belly button, panty line, top of your pubic bone, butt, upper thighs, and strands along the labia.

Not only that, Brazilian wax can be used to decorate your intimate skin. Just ask your salon aestheticians to leave a small strip of hair depending on your preferred style. (You can even request a heart-shaped landing strip!)

Invented in the 1990s by J Sisters, Brazilian wax first conquered the United States. Due to its popularity among celebrities and prominent female personalities, the wax craze traveled overseas. The popularity of Brazilian bikini waxing also comes with its quick way to smooth things out below the waist.

What’s the Difference Between Bikini Wax and Brazilian Wax?

The concept of a bikini wax has already been familiar to most of us. Bikini line wax is when a salon esthetician uses hot wax to remove hair that would be visible if one did wear a bikini bottom.

Brazilian, on the other hand, is essentially the same thing — just removing more pubic hair in your intimate areas. You can also go completely bare or leave a small triangle strip of hair on top of your skin. A Brazilian wax is a way to go if you want an absolutely clean shave in your pubic area.

How do Brazilian Waxes Work?

Other than your bikini line that’s being waxed and the yoga positions you have to get into, a full Brazilian wax is just like any other wax treatment.

Are you new to Brazilian waxing? Here’s what you can expect during your first Brazilian wax session:

Before you begin the session, discuss with your esthetician whether you want a landing strip on your skin or to be completely bare. You can also talk about your pain tolerance.

The waxer will lead you to your room and instruct you to remove your undergarments. (Don’t be embarrassed about your private parts; your waxer has seen it all!)

Powder will be applied by your waxer to prevent the wax from sticking to your skin.

Waxing begins at the front and moves towards the back. You may be asked to assist in holding areas that the wax technician cannot reach.

The technician will dip a wooden stick into the wax pot and apply it to your skin using either a soft wax or a hard wax to remove hairs. (Hard wax is recommended for this method, but it still depends on your waxer.)

The salon esthetician will pull the strip wax in the opposite direction of your hair growth. This quick motion will remove the hair from the root. This process will be repeated until you are completely hair-free.

Because this is a Brazilian wax, you may be asked to turn over and lie on your stomach or kneel on the table to remove hair from your buttocks. (Don’t be embarrassed if you’re asked to hold your cheeks apart.)

After the main wax procedure, the esthetician may use a tweezer to pluck any stray hairs from your private area.

Finally, the technician will apply a soothing cream to your waxed area to protect your skin.

Be extra careful and watch out for double dipping! A double dip occurs when a wax stick is placed on your skin and then dipped in the wax pot again. To avoid double dipping, ensure that your technician replaces the stick once it comes into contact with your skin. (Or simply avoids allowing the wax stick to come directly in contact!)

The entire process takes about 10 minutes to an hour, depending on your condition. So, while you may experience pain, it will be over soon enough.

Is Brazilian Wax Very Painful?

To answer this question, it depends on your pain tolerance. However, it may be extremely painful for first-time waxers. As wax adheres to the hair root, it also takes the top layer of skin as well, which causes more pain.

If you want to make your experience less painful, the only key you got is to keep getting it. As hair weakens and some even stop growing back, waxing becomes less painful.

As previously stated, getting a Brazilian takes around a few minutes to an hour, so know that the light at the end of the tunnel is close at hand.

How Long Does Brazilian Wax Last?

A Brazilian wax, just like other typical hair removal methods, usually lasts three to six weeks. Depending on how much hair grows, you will notice hair creeping out sooner or later than expected.

Since waxing removes all the hair from the roots, growth is usually slower than regular shaving. Shaving, on the other hand, lasts for an average of three to seven days.

Prepare for Your Wax Session

Waxing needs forward-planning to ensure a safe and less painful experience. Here are some of the ways to prepare yourself before the d-day:

Set your Schedule

Schedule your appointment before your monthly period. As there will be more blood flow in your pubic area during your menstrual cycle, your skin will be super sensitive.

But, what if your period comes during your waxing session? Worry not, because you can absolutely wax while on your period! (Although you may experience more pain.)

If you have questions or concerns about your first waxing session, you can speak with your esthetician or education manager before your appointment to provide you with a complete process of waxing down there. Your waxer will help you feel confident and comfortable.

Let Your Pubic Hair Grow!

Since Brazilians remove all of your hair down there, one important thing to remember is your current hair growth. Let your hair grow accordingly since you may feel more discomfort if it is shorter than the recommended length.

If you are removing your hair with a razor, you should stop shaving and wait for at least three to four weeks before getting waxed.

Prep with Pre Wax Oil

Since we have sensitive skin down there, prepping your skin with wax oil will help get rid of the skin’s dirt, sweat, oils, and bacteria. Not only does oil protect the skin, but also serves as a ‘magnet’ for the wax, causing it to stick to the hair itself rather than the skin.

Wear loose-fitting clothes

Wearing loose clothing is recommended to make your session easier and more comfortable. Before your appointment, prepare your loose undergarments and avoid harsh and abrasive clothing. Your skin, even your technician, will thank you after.

But before wearing one, don’t forget to wash your intimate area thoroughly before your appointment. (Bonus tip: Dip in a warm shower to help open your pores.)

Aftercare

Now that you achieved a hair-free aesthetic down there, you will need to know how to maintain smooth and soft skin for a longer period of time. Here are some of the things you should do after getting waxed:

Don’t Scratch!

As much as you would like to feel your newly waxed pubic region, you may want to skip touching and scratching it in the meantime. Since your bikini line is such a sensitive area, you must be careful to avoid further irritation.

Apply Cortisone Cream

Many will observe small and red bumps on the skin after waxing. Since hair is removed from your body, applying cortisone cream after waxing may help relieve inflammation and swelling. Religiously apply a soothing cream to avoid further irritation, especially for people with super sensitive skin.

Exfoliate to Prevent Ingrown Hairs

A few days after getting waxed, practice weekly exfoliation to remove the dead skin that would get trapped in the hair follicles, preparing to be ingrown hairs. Just make sure to give your skin time to recover before beginning an exfoliation regimen to avoid pain and discomfort.

Weekly exfoliation promotes fine hairs to grow back through the skin and stops them from developing into those annoying ingrown hairs.

Avoid Sweaty Activities

Hair follicles remain open for several hours after getting waxed, so avoid any contact with any moisture and sweat for at least 24 hours. That being said, don’t take shower with hot water and avoid sweating out after getting waxed. (Yes, it includes sexual activity!)

Final Note

Let’s get things straight: Body hair is completely normal. There’s no right or wrong way to handle your pubic hair, and what you choose to do (or not to do) with your body is personal. Getting rid of and trimming your hair is a choice you make for yourself.

If you don’t want hair covering your intimate area, you can say goodbye to rough shaving and start getting a full Brazilian wax.

Waxing isn’t just a popular hair removal method. While appearance is one of the primary reasons why people enjoy Brazilian waxes, getting a Brazilian also exfoliates your skin and removes dead skin cells.

You can also give yourself a DIY Brazilian wax at home with the available waxing kit at the market. Make sure to know the safety tips and tricks in removing hair at home to avoid complications and irritations. That being said, it is still recommended to try Brazilian waxing at the local salon near you.

Dealing with unwanted body hair is serious business for us women. That’s why there have been body hair removal salons all over the country and some of us even have routine appointments pencil booked to schedule our unwanted hair removal ritual. But all have changed in the past year due to healthcare protocols as we deal with the pandemic. Thus we opt for DIY hair removal techniques at home.

There are different at-home methods for hair removal such as shaving, waxing, sugaring, and other natural ways to remove body hair. Whichever method you choose, it is better to always be cautious as there is still some risk when you do hair removal at home, especially without professional supervision.

So here are some safety tips and tricks that you can follow while we are still waiting for our next hair removal salon visit.

Practice These 4 Steps to Hair-Free Skin

On our journey to a fuzz-free body, it is important to follow these 4 steps to ensure smooth hair-free skin.

1. Cleanse

Just like any artist does, start with a clean canvass. We want to make sure to remove all the dirt and bacteria on our skin that could go to a deeper layer once we do the actual removal of hair. This can cause irritation and bumps or inflammation called folliculitis.

2. Exfoliate

Have you ever tried hair removal before but you still have a lot of unwanted hair on your skin? Then try exfoliating your skin first the next time you try hair removal at home. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells that have gathered around the follicles, allowing you to achieve the finest hair removal results possible and also prevent ingrown hair.

But if you will be shaving, waxing, or sugaring, please note that you cannot use a chemical exfoliant. It can make your skin sensitive and cause extreme skin irritation. It is better to lightly exfoliate with gentle scrubs or soft towels to gently remove dead skin.

If you will be doing a DIY natural method of body hair removal, be sure to check if the ingredients that you will use will not counter-react with the chemical exfoliant.

3. Hair Removal

There are a lot of options that you can choose for at-home body removal. Here are just some of the options that you can consider to try at home:

Shaving: This may be one of the most well-known methods for body hair removal. The pros are that it is easy to do and you need a good razor. The cons are that it can lead to dark skin and chicken skin and your body hair will grow back quickly. Tip: Use shaving cream and choose a razor with at least 3 blades for a smoother hair-free result.

Waxing: This is one of the most effective methods of body hair removal and the result can last up to 3-4 weeks. Though, it can be painful especially if it is the first time that you will try it. Waxing is also more prone to ingrown hair. Also, if you will be using the traditional hot wax rather than the cold wax strips, be sure to check the temperature of the hot wax to prevent burning yourself. If you do burn yourself in the process, then do the following steps:

Put the affected area in running cold water.

Don’t put ice directly on the burnt area as it will worsen the condition, rather, use a cold compress.

If you have aloe vera at home, you can apply it in the burnt skin.

If you noticed that it is still not healing, then it is best to have it checked by a medical professional.

Depilatory Cream: A depilatory cream uses chemicals to break down hair follicles in just 5 to 10 minutes. The results are a clean, fresh, and hairless face in a short amount of time. The only thing you need to be cautious about when using this product is that it may be harsh for some. Though most of these creams have been formulated with moisturizing ingredients to lessen the irritation, it is better to do a patch test before using this product all over your body.

Sugaring: Similar to waxing, sugaring results can last for a longer period of time. But this all-natural method is less painful and it can be created right at the comfort of your own home. If you have honey, lemon, and sugar, then you are good to go. It does have a caveat though. The ingredients may be easy to find, but doing a DIY version at home may take quite a lot of trial before you can get a perfect consistency. So you will need a lot of patience if you want to do this at home.

4. Moisturize

In our pursuit of removing the unwanted hair from our body, we have also stripped our skin of its natural oils. So right after whichever method you choose for body hair removal, it is important to moisturize your skin to prevent infection, itch, and other skin irritation.

Try products with Aloe Vera, Chamomile, and Vitamine E as this can help soothe your skin. You can also look for products that have AHAs as this is not only moisturizing but can also keep dead skin cells at bay to prevent ingrown hairs. If you have dry skin, then shea butter or natural body oil will be your best friend!

Final Note

At-home body hair removal can be quite scary and can be a daunting task. For some, they consider just not dealing with it. Since we are mostly at home in the meantime, they would just rather let it grow.

Whether you are a person who wants to have hair-free smooth skin 24/7 and will try to do it at home for now or you’re someone who is just more comfortable having your own body hair removal at home, it is always better to take the necessary preparations and aftercare to ensure that your skin will not be irritated or inflamed. Be sure to follow the 4 easy steps for hair-free smooth skin all year round.

Laser Hair Removal: Pros, Cons, and Everything You Should Know

Itching to get rid of hair in certain areas? You’re not alone. Oftentimes, having body hair — as natural as it may be — can be a source of self-consciousness. While more and more people are feeling comfortable sporting their au natural look, body hair and all, some people may still prefer a clean-shaven appearance.

However, certain styles of hair removal can actually do more harm than good. Shaving can yield chicken skin and ingrown hairs, as can waxing, and the hair regrows quite quickly. Depilatory creams are quick and easy, but they can be too harsh and cause skin sensitivity, sometimes leading to burning.

So what exactly is the best way to get rid of unwanted hair without putting our skin through too much?

Enter: laser hair removal. Thanks to modern technology, laser treatment is now one of the most popular and easiest methods of removing body hair. Laser hair removal works by targeting specific areas with unwanted hair growth through laser light. The pigment in the hair attracts the laser, which in turn attempts to destroy the hair follicle by the root.

And contrary to how the word “laser” may sound, most laser hair removal treatments are actually incredibly safe and don’t hurt at all. They also last longer and don’t require a lot of maintenance except for your return sessions.

Trust us when we say this procedure isn’t as complicated as it sounds, and it’s also a sensible option if you’re aiming for permanent hair reduction.

Among other hair removal methods, laser hair removal is one of the most highly-favored cosmetic procedures. There’s no doubt why — it’s simple, effective, and semi-permanent.

Thinking about booking a session yourself? Here’s everything you need to know!

What exactly is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a form of semi-permanent hair removal for hair growth in different parts of the body. The energy from the laser destroys the hair follicle at the root, preventing further hair growth. To get you started, here are some fast facts about laser hair removal:

1. There are three main types

A few factors go into play when we’re talking about laser hair removal. First is the patient’s skin color. Since laser hair removal works by detecting pigment in hairs, darker skin tones were often discouraged from getting laser treatments. This is because of the possibility that the laser would mistake darker skin tones for hair pigment, leading to complications during the procedure.

Fortunately, technology has since improved to accommodate people of varying skin tones. There are 3 main types of laser treatments:

Diode — One of the more recent and perhaps widely-used methods of removing hair safely is through diode laser treatments. That’s because diode lasers are safe to use on any skin type. Whether you have fair skin, medium skin, or dark skin, the diode laser knows how to get rid of unwanted hairs.

Alexandrite — Looking to get rid of body hair on a large part of your body? The alexandrite is your gal. It’s the fastest among the types of lasers, so if the affected skin is pretty vast, this might be your best option. It is recommended for those who have light to olive skin tones.

Nd:YAG — If you’re someone with darker skin, then Nd:YAG is another great choice. In fact, it’s better suited for dark skin than it is for those with light skin. Nd:YAG uses a long pulse laser which is shown to be less efficient in targeting melanin, making it safe for darker skin types.

2. Laser hair removal isn’t painful

It’s hard not to think of lasers as something that’s going to zap and burn your skin. Thankfully, laser hair removal is incredibly painless. All you have to do is prepare your skin beforehand (no waxing, certain medications, tweezing, etc.) and basically just sit back and relax.

They might even apply a topical anesthetic or numbing cream if the situation calls for it. In some clinics, they’ll apply cold gel or work a special cooling device on the area. If you feel any pain during the procedure, be sure to alert the professional handling you.

3. Results take time and multiple sessions

Don’t expect permanent hair removal right away. In the world of laser treatments, patience and actually attending all your follow-up sessions is key. While the hair removal process is itself very quick (usually less than a minute if the affected area is small, like the underarm), it might take 2-3 weeks after the first treatment to see visible results.

Also, you’ll need to come back for repeat visits and multiple sessions in order for the laser to destroy the hair follicles and prevent future hair growth.

In our opinion, this is a better investment for those of us who don’t want to keep shaving or waxing every time our hair grows out. You’ll have to go back for multiple treatments over a span of time, the average being six to eight sessions for the best results. However, the rate of hair growth and the interval between each treatment will depend on the area being treated.

4. A laser treatment is great for those who have thick, coarse, or dark hair

Most of us Filipinas have thick, dark, and even coarse hair, and we all know how hard hair removal is especially if the hair keeps growing back quickly. Not to worry, because laser hair removal is actually perfect for dark hair.

This is because the laser is attracted to pigment, making it an effective hair removal procedure. However, you might need more repeat sessions than others.

5. Laser treatment is effective in multiple areas

Whether it’s your bikini, underarm, chin, or upper lip area that needs a little retouching, laser hair removal is highly effective. You can also get a procedure done in other parts, but these four are the best candidates.

6. You might have to avoid the sun for a while

One downside to this hair removal method is that you’ll really have to plan it out on a day where you haven’t been exposed to the sun for long periods of time because you’re not only required to avoid sun exposure after the process but before it, too.

According to Cosmopolitan, you might not be able to get the procedure done if the targeted area has been exposed to direct sunlight four weeks prior to the appointment.

In some cases, this can mean having to cover up the treatment area, such as the underarm or bikini line. The most you’ll have to do is avoid sleeveless tops and bikinis. However, you’ll have to be a little more careful if you’re planning to zap away hairs on your upper lip or chin area.

7. Permanent hair removal requires investment

And by investment, we don’t just mean time. We mean actual financial investment. In the Philippines, the average cost for a single session is somewhere around Php 2,500-3,500 depending on the clinic. Some offer lifetime packages that have a discounted price compared to single-paying sessions.

If you’re lucky, you can even score a promo. But the bottom line is, be prepared to shell out a little money, at least at first. Depending on your hair removal habits, investing in laser treatments can actually save you more money in the long run.

Is laser hair removal bad for you?

There’s no doubt that laser hair removal is an incredibly safe option. However, there are still a few potential side effects. According to the FDA, a laser hair removal treatment may cause blistering, discoloration, skin irritation, and redness.

In some very rare cases, laser hair removal has actually resulted in more hair growing. Specifically, vellus hairs have been shown to grow longer when the laser targets them. Don’t worry, though, because most professionals will be able to tell you beforehand if this might be an issue.

Do be sure to have the procedure done by a licensed professional of cosmetic dermatology to get the best out of your laser hair removal treatment. We also advise not to do it at home unless you’re also an experienced professional in this area.

How permanent is laser hair removal?

In order to permanently remove hair, the hair follicle must be fully destroyed, according to Medical News Today. This sounds simple, but it actually takes a bit of time and repeated treatments in order to fully achieve.

We mentioned above that you’d need six to eight sessions, which will vary depending on the treated area, in order to get permanent results, a.k.a. really remove those hair follicles. If the hair follicle still isn’t fully destroyed, expect some hair regrowth within a few months.

How long does hair have to be for laser removal?

Your hair has to be quite short for your session. In fact, most clinics will ask you to shave your hair within 24 hours before the session. Waxing and tweezing are huge no’s, however, as these can remove the hair follicle. With shaving, the hair follicle stays intact, allowing the laser to easily target it.

Is it worth getting laser hair removal?

With all the preparation necessary, is the procedure truly worth it? We believe so! The procedure is ultimately safe, quick, and most of all, effective. Now you won’t have to suffer through the woes of shaving your bikini line and worrying about razor burns or the chicken skin that comes from tweezing your underarms.

It’s good news if your hair grows quickly, too, because you won’t have to keep removing it every so often. Instead, you’ll just have to wait for your next few sessions. Once each hair follicle has been safely zapped away, you’ll have hair-free, smoother skin!

Final Note

At the end of the day, beauty is all about being comfortable in your own skin. If you prefer to go hair-free, then laser treatment is a worthy investment, especially if you want to get rid of hair in unwanted places for good. It’s proven by plenty of medical science journals to be safe and effective. Just make sure to do all the prep work and aftercare, and you’re golden!

How to Remove Body Hair Naturally for Women

As much as people deny it, everyone has body hair and facial hair. Depending on your personal preference, you may want to get rid of body hair in less than ideal places. There are several methods for body hair removal that are common to most people, especially women, but each of them comes with its own pros and cons, and likely aren’t permanent.

Shaving leaves little stumps of hair that grow back quickly, waxing causes skin irritation and may even lead to ingrown hair, and laser hair removal treatment tends to cause sensitivity to the skin.

In this article, we’ll be talking about the different kinds of natural hair removal treatment so you can find the method that works best for you, your (unwanted) hair, and your skin!

What kills hair follicles naturally?

Your hair is made up of a tough protein called keratin, and each hair strand has a follicle that anchors it to your skin. The hair follicle is the root of your problem, literally. Hair follicles are responsible for your hair growth, color, and even how straight or curly it gets. Even if you pluck the hair from it, a new hair is sure to grow back soon. Basically, what you want to do is to destroy the hair follicles so it never gets a chance to grow back more hair.

Can you permanently remove body hair without a side effect?

Contrary to most marketing claims, there aren’t a lot of permanent hair removal methods. As we’ve previously mentioned, shaving or waxing your legs and plucking your unwanted facial hair just don’t cut it (pun intended). The following are some of the most effective long-term hair removal techniques and methods that you can try.

Laser Hair Removal

Lasers can target and destroy the hair follicle without causing damage to the surrounding skin. Although it won’t completely get rid of the hairs, it does diminish hair growth to the point that you don’t need to shave anymore. This treatment can be done on any part of your body with unwanted hair growth, with the exception of your eye area, and is considerably cheaper than electrolysis. This results in new hairs growing back finer and lighter, which works best for people with fairer skin and dark hair.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is an incredibly effective permanent hair removal remedy, yet it is also the most expensive process. This is the method that destroys the hair follicles to prevent new hairs from growing.

It basically uses electric currents that are conducted through fine needles and placed directly on the hair follicle. Unlike shaving and waxing, electrolysis destroys the follicle preventing any new hair growth. This is obviously not one of the at-home hair removal methods as it can only be done by board-certified dermatologists.

The side effects include pain and redness from skin irritation, and it will take many sessions before you can see any results. One session can cost $30-100, so people have to take all this into consideration before trying out this treatment.

Depilatory Creams

Another alternative to shaving and waxing is using a hair removal cream. A hair removal cream or depilatory cream breaks down the protein in each hair strand until it dissolves. This is actually one of the least painful ways to remove hair as the dissolved hair can then be easily wiped away.

A hair removal cream is generally safe to use, but it still contains various harmful chemicals. Carelessness when using these creams for hair removal results in possible rashes, blisters, or even chemical burns.

Chemical Hair Removers

Other than topical creams, one of the ways people can remove unwanted hair naturally is through the process of using chemical products. There are some chemicals in everyday items that we use that can damage hair follicles. Some of these chemicals are:

Sodium Hydroxide and Calcium Hydroxide (Lime and Lye). This combination increases the hair’s PH level until the acidity destroys the follicles.

Sodium Chloride (Table salt). While table salt isn’t toxic, it can dry out your scalp resulting in hair loss.

Potassium Thioglycolate. An active ingredient in hair removal creams, it breaks down hair proteins and dissolves follicles.

Thioglycolic Acid. This does not directly damage hair follicles. But it destroys the protein structure in the hair and skin, making it difficult for the follicle to grow hair.

Diethanolamine (DEA). This synthetic ingredient makes your hair dull, brittle and lifeless – effectively killing it.

Propylene Glycol. It damages cell membranes cutting off nutrient supply in the follicles. This prevents it from growing more hair.

Potassium Hydroxide. This extremely corrosive chemical also damages cells responsible for hair growth.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. A common ingredient in shampoos, it strips the hair of essential proteins and oil. This results in slower hair growth, breakage, or hair loss.

Best Natural Body Hair Removal Methods

Expensive and/or chemical treatments may sound like great hair removal options. But if those methods don’t sit right with you, there are always natural hair removal methods that you can prepare and use at home. From pumice stones to sugar wax, there are plenty of ways to remove body hair naturally and without harming your skin. A few of these ways include:

1. Raw Papaya Paste with Turmeric

Not only is papaya a delicious summer fruit, it’s also great for taking care of your skin, plus it’s a key ingredient in one of the methods for natural hair removal.

Mash a small amount of raw papaya in a bowl until it turns into papaya pulp. Add 1-2 tablespoons of turmeric powder to the papaya pulp and mix the two into a paste. Apply the turmeric and papaya mixture to the parts of your skin with unwanted body hair, such as your forearms and legs, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before you wash off with warm water. You can apply this once or twice a week regularly for 2-3 months. (Note that turmeric/turmeric powder might cause yellow staining on your clothes and body so handle it with care.)

Papaya, and by nature, papaya pulp contains the enzyme papain. Papain from papaya works to reduce hair growth, while turmeric has a long list of its many benefits. For those of you who don’t know, turmeric is a bright yellow, fragrant spice that has been used as a natural beauty remedy since ancient times.

Turmeric can be used as a hair cleanser because of its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Like papaya, turmeric’s primary service is to weaken hair follicles but is mostly used to get rid of unwanted facial hair. Combined, turmeric and papaya become a fantastic hair removal method that will help get rid of unwanted hair naturally.

2. Cornstarch and Egg

This peel-off mask is another natural (and skin-friendly!) hair removal technique that can be made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry at home.

Separate the egg white from one raw egg and mix it with a teaspoon of cornstarch and sugar. Layer the paste on your legs or other areas of your skin with unwanted hair, increasing the amount as you go. You’ll start to feel the egg mask tightening on your skin after about 20-30 minutes. Peel off the mask against the direction the hair is growing in and pat dry.

The sugar and cornstarch will work as a mild exfoliant that will help remove hair and dead skin cells. The egg white has pore-tightening properties that will nourish your skin.

3. Sugar, Honey, and Lemon

If you’ve ever tried waxing your legs and other body hair off before, then you’re ready to try out this more natural method using these delicious ingredients. This concoction is what’s called a sugar wax. A sugar wax is a gentle alternative to traditional waxing. This method works the same way as waxing and uses waxing strips to peel off hair in different areas.

Start with mixing a tablespoon each of sugar, honey, and lemon in a metal bowl. Heat it gently until it forms a wax-like paste. Apply the sugar wax on a small part of your body with unwanted hair growth. Cover the area with a waxing strip, pat gently, and peel it off against the direction of your hair growth.

Similar to traditional waxing, you should do this in small increments all over your legs, bikini line, or even on your chest hair. Take your time to moisturize afterwards to prevent drying out your skin. If traditional waxing methods irritate certain body parts, sugar waxing is a gentler alternative.

People often use honey for its antibacterial properties and as a great moisturizer, while sugar is one of the ways to help exfoliate the skin. On the other hand, the lemon is an effective skin bleach making this combo a fantastic method to getting rid of unwanted hair naturally! The results are smooth, hairless skin that lasts a few weeks. You may try adding aloe vera (gel or raw) into the mixture if you feel like your skin needs a little extra moisture.

4. Potato and Lentils Paste

Similar to the first natural hair removal solution, this paste makes for an easy application process that you leave on and wash off with water. This does take some preparation as the process starts with you soaking a cup of lentils in water overnight. This will make it easier for you to grind it into a paste the next day.

The next step is to grate a medium-sized potato and extract the juice using a spoon or a cloth. Mix the two juices together and add a tablespoon of honey and lemon. Let it sit and dry on the parts of your skin with unwanted hair. Once it dries, you can rub it off with your fingers and wash with lukewarm water.

Potatoes are some of the best natural active bleaching agents that will help lighten the hairs and surrounding skin, while also aiding to remove hair in the places you don’t want them to grow. When mixed with lentils, the paste is one of the ways that will help remove hair naturally.

5. Baking Soda and Turmeric

The many benefits of turmeric rise again in this natural hair removal remedy. If you have a bottle of turmeric powder and baking soda in your pantry, then you’re already set to try this hair removal method.

Mix together one tablespoon each of baking soda and turmeric powder while adding water gradually until it forms a paste. Gently massage the turmeric paste onto the areas of body hair that you want to get rid of and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. After that, just wash the turmeric and baking soda mixture off with lukewarm water and pat dry.(Note that turmeric/turmeric powder might cause some yellow staining on your clothes and body so handle it with care.)

Our favorite powerhouse ingredient, turmeric, brings its antioxidant properties to the table once again to remove hair naturally. While turmeric is used to remove hair from the skin, it does not kill hair follicles. Turmeric could stimulate blood flow and induce hair follicle growth. Combine turmeric with the gentle exfoliant, baking soda, and you’re one step closer to never shaving your body hair again!

6. Oatmeal and Banana Scrub

This delicious-smelling body scrub not only gently exfoliates your skin, it also gets rid of unwanted body hair.

This natural hair removal method requires you to mash one banana and mix it with two tablespoons of oatmeal. Apply the mixture on regions with body hair that you want to get rid off and massage in the opposite direction to that of your hair growth. Let it sit for 20 minutes before rinsing off with cold water and patting dry.

Not only does it get rid of body hair, unwanted facial hair, and even chest hair, it also reduces the rate of hair growth, leaving you with silky smooth skin for longer!

7. Oil Massage

Can you believe you spent all this time suffering through shaving your legs and waxing your bikini line, when the ultimate body hair removal answer was just in an oil massage?

A massage using coconut, castor, mustard, tea tree, or sesame oil is another natural hair removal method that combines heat, friction, and moisture to thin and lighten the hair. It also helps to close the hair roots over time — which sounds amazing to me.

8. Garlic Juice

I don’t know if it’ll be enough to keep away vampires, but the sulphur, selenium, and zinc in garlic are a great way to keep unsightly facial hair, or any other hair for that matter, away from your beautiful body.

Pick and smash a few garlic cloves and extract the juice. This hair removal method works by dipping a cotton ball in the garlic juice and applying it on the areas of your skin where you want to remove hair naturally from. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and rinse completely with warm water. Follow it up with a moisturizer to get rid of that garlicky smell (or don’t, if that’s what you’re into).

9. Chamomile Tea

Unlike the previous ingredient, chamomile tea is made from daisy-like flowers that smell light and sweet. Chamomile tea was once a frequently used method for lightening hair. What actually happens is that your hair absorbs the golden yellow color of chamomile. The results of the lightened hair shows up better in the sun, and will vary depending on your hair color.

To use this on your body hair, steep two bags of chamomile tea for a few minutes and allow it to cool. Apply it on the areas of your skin that have some hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. This method to lighten hair naturally must be continuously done at home every week for a few months. Try it out for yourself and the results might surprise you!

Final Note

Hair removal is, more often than not, an aesthetic choice as opposed to a necessary one. Depending on the time of the year, body hair might be unsightly in some areas of the skin than most. The important part of body hair removal that we should remember is that it’s your choice how much of your hair you want to get rid of and how you do it.

Getting rid of hair via chemical means might be efficient for you or maybe natural hair removal methods are what interest you. At the end of the day, your body — skin, hair, and all — is completely yours!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How can I remove body hair permanently at home?

Removing body hair at home can be tricky. We’re all used to short-term methods like shaving, waxing, and creams, but the results aren’t always ideal as the hairs tend to grow back in such a short amount of time. Maintaining the treated skin after shaving and waxing can be difficult, too.

Shaving and waxing have their own disadvantages. Short-term results are one of them. Often, the biggest reason we turn to shaving is out of convenience and the fact that shaving doesn’t require the help of a professional. However, shaving can also cause all sorts of unwanted situations like chicken skin, small stumps growing back quickly, and shaving cuts.

Waxing is also not for everyone, as it tends to dry out the skin and can even lead to ingrown hairs. However, there are natural waxing methods that are less irritating. Sugar waxing is one of these ways, and we go into detail in the section above.

Since neither shaving or waxing are permanent solutions to one’s problems with unwanted hair growth, you might want to check out semi-permanent ways to do so. There is no way to permanently remove hair at home, but with some effort, you may be able to permanently or semi-permanently reduce hair growth with store-bought devices or DIY pastes and scrubs that you can make at home.

One of the ways to remove hair without having to go to the clinic for a session is to consult with your dermatologist or licensed healthcare professional about prescription creams. Prescription creams can be used to destroy unwanted hairs by the root in order to prevent them from growing further.

Unlike shaving or waxing, you’ll actually get long-term results with these professional treatments. Just be prepared to spend a little!

How can I permanently remove hair from my stomach naturally?

Like we said above, in order to (almost) permanently remove hair from any body part, you’ll have to go beyond the usual shaving creams and waxing. A diode laser treatment is the go-to among Filipinas as it can accommodate different skin tones.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Hair removal via a laser treatment is not permanent, but it does effectively stunt the growth of hair on the body for a long period of time. After the initial sessions, most people need only to go back once every 1-2 years for a touch-up. Even though you’ll be making a big investment, it certainly beats the high-maintenance methods of shaving and waxing body hair.

How to Remove Facial Hair For Women

Tired of that peach fuzz growing back in? Or perhaps the hair on your cheeks, chin, and other random areas has gotten in the way of getting the clear skin you’ve always dreamed of? No matter the case, there are plenty of facial hair removal methods that can sort you out. Some of them can be done at home, while others require the help of a professional.

Bottom line is, us women don’t have to feel self-conscious about it for long. While having facial hair is absolutely normal and nothing to be ashamed of (even superstars have it!), more severe cases can cause buildup of dirt in our pores.

In this article, we’ll be talking about the different ways to remove facial hair. Read on to find the best style suited for you!

Is facial hair removal safe for women?

Hair removal can be delicate, especially when it’s done in sensitive areas on the face. Some methods, such as dermaplaning, can be more delicate than others as they require careful removal of hair using a tiny scalpel. It limits hair growth by removing a thin layer of skin so dirt doesn’t clog up the hair follicle or pores. Rest assured, however, that a professional can do this hair removal method with utmost care. And don’t believe every horror story you hear about peach fuzz growing back thicker!

Other hair removal treatments can be done at home with no professional training needed, such as waxing, depilatories, and tweezing. There are even organic solutions such as mixtures of sugar, water, lemon juice, tea tree oil, and more. These home remedies are a great short-term solution to removing that peach fuzz or occasional stray hair.

What is the best at-home hair removal method?

Wax strips, natural mixtures, and depilatories are some of the best hair removal techniques that can be done by yourself, although these work more as a short-term solution than long-term ones. However, if you prefer to maintain your own hair at home, then these are the best options:

Sugaring Skin

Sugaring is an all-natural technique which includes the use of ingredients such as lemon juice and water to make a thick paste, leaving your face free of any unwanted hair for as long as six weeks.

Removing hair with a sugar paste or gel is almost similar to using wax, but much cleaner and apparently less painful. This is because a sugar paste can remove unwanted hair as short as 1/16 inch. Unlike waxing, which requires ¼-inch long hair to remove, you don’t have to grow out the hair on your body before removing it with sugar.

Women who absolutely hate how painful waxing is are bound to love this gentler treatment. However, since the paste is bound to be very sticky, it’s going to take some skill to mold with one’s fingers. You’ll need to be able to hold the skin taut before applying the layer of gel or paste on the treated area of the body. Many say this can also remove dead skin cells.

There’s also a similar method involving sugar called sugar waxing. This is, supposedly, a similar version, except it uses a thinner substance compared to the paste. It’s also said to be easier to mold compared to the thick paste of sugaring, even so far as to be removable by water. Ingredients used are almost similar, usually sugar, water, lemon juice, and tea tree oil or a chamomile extract.

Wax Strips

Traditional waxing is a tried-and-tested way to remove unwanted hair growth in certain areas. However, the skin on our face is obviously going to be a lot more sensitive than, say, our underarms or legs. Can you imagine the irritated, raw feeling right after having your armpits waxed, but directly above your mouth this time? Not great!

Good thing there are facial wax strips that are designed to be more gentle with removing unwanted hair in this delicate area. Waxing can remove hair for as long as four weeks. Just make sure not to use any harsh exfoliants beforehand as it can increase the sensitivity of your skin. After care is vital, too. Once you’re done waxing that peach fuzz, slather on a light, calming oil to moisturize and soothe the skin.

Depilatory Cream

If you’re looking for a quick fix to your facial hair woes, then depilatory cream products are the way to go. A depilatory cream uses chemicals to break down hair follicles in just 5 to 10 minutes. The results are a clean, fresh, and hairless face in a short amount of time. The downside? These products can be super harsh, especially in sensitive areas. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely off the table, though. Most of these creams are formulated to be extra moisturizing so your skin doesn’t become too irritated afterwards.

However, this style might not be suitable for all skin types. Our advice is to do a patch test with your chosen product on areas like the inside of your elbow or the back of the ear before trying one out, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin!

Tweezing

Perfect for brows and the occasional chin hairs, tweezers are one of the best facial hair removal products because they’re easy, quick, and have few side effects. You don’t need to go to the clinic or use a complicated appliance. Just a few minutes and off those chin, T-zone, or eyebrow hairs go! Obviously, if you’re looking for longer-lasting results, there are much better options. But if you need a quick pluck, then all you need are tweezers.

Threading

Threading is a great, inexpensive, and yet super efficient tool for shaping the brows or removing peach fuzz at home. According to Byrdie, there’s a general rule of thumb here: if you can feel the hair, then you’ll most likely be able to thread it. This method is great because it doesn’t use any chemicals or expensive tools, making it more amenable to all skin types.

Shaving

This method we all know, but it doesn’t exactly produce the best results. Pros: they’re easy! If you’re simply looking for a quick way to remove stray hair, then a shave is super convenient. There are tools specifically for facial shaving available (never your body shave on your face!) and they’re best paired with a cream or oil to soothe the skin. Cons: shaving often results in darkened skin or chicken skin, only to have hair grow back in a short amount of time.

Can I permanently remove hair on my face?

Plenty of women struggle with trying to permanently remove hair from their face. Thankfully, technology has adapted to give us a wide range of options. Although not all of these are permanent, they can keep the growth of unwanted hairs at bay for much, much longer than the other methods we’ve discussed thus far. Let’s check some of them out — you just might find the right approach for you!

Laser Hair Removal

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest content on our page, then you’ll know we’ve done an article all about diode laser removal. This method is safe, speedy, and suited for Filipina skin tones.

As long as you do the right preparation beforehand, this treatment is one of the most long-lasting ones, being able to limit hair growth over the course of a few years. Laser hair removal inhibits hair growth straight from the hair follicle using a designated device, so you won’t have to worry about constant maintenance. It’s also suitable for almost all skin types. If you have experience manning a laser hair remover, then you can buy a device online and save the extra cost of going to a clinic.

Electrolysis

Although less popular in the Philippines, electrolysis is a permanent hair removal style approved by the FDA. This approach uses an electric current to zap hairs individually, which results in permanent removal. While a little painful compared to the previous procedure we talked about, electrolysis does have an advantage in that you don’t need to have a certain skin tone; it’s compatible with everyone.

Prescription Facial Hair Removal Cream

These intensive hair removal creams are formulated specifically to address the issue of unwanted hairs. They work similarly to prescription creams for our skin. If you’ve been having trouble keeping those unwanted hairs at bay, a prescription might be for you.

Diode Laser Hair Removal: What You Need to Know Before Your Session

So, you’ve finally decided to bite the bullet and try laser hair removal. The world of laser treatment, when looked upon at a distance, can be complicated and its effects a little vague. But there’s a reason diode laser hair removal has shot up in popularity over the years. Many young women and men prefer this method of hair removal for its speed, safety, and effectiveness. Price point aside, those who have had negative experiences with other cheaper hair removal methods will realize that a laser treatment is more cost-efficient in the long run.

But that doesn’t mean you can just walk into the clinic and have a go right away. Laser hair removal treatment requires a few weeks of preparation in order to achieve the best results. If this long-term solution is what you prefer, then read on as we show you everything you need to know before your diode laser hair removal session!

Is diode laser hair removal painful?

Not all laser treatments are the same. Some laser treatments are more painful than the other, and it depends on the technology and machinery used in the process. Clinics that use single pulse lasers often attempt to reduce the pain with a numbing cream for a more comfortable procedure.

This is because a laser hair removal treatment slows down hair growth by targeting hair follicles, disabling their ability to grow further. Because a laser uses an electrical current to target hair follicles, one will naturally experience some pain and discomfort. The level of pain, however, will vary on the specific technology used.

SkinStation, a local skin clinic, uses a different type of technology called rapid-pulsing diode laser, an alternative that is said to be less painful than the convention laser. The latter treatment uses low energy lasers, compared to the single-pulse laser which is more high-energy, albeit still effective. Rapid-pulsing diode lasers use more precise technology to selectively hit the melanin in each hair follicle without affecting the outer area.

Is diode laser hair removal effective?

The biggest selling point of a diode laser hair removal treatment is, by far, its effectiveness. Those who have accumulated dark underarms or chicken skin due to plucking, shaving, or waxing turn to lasers to solve their hair removal problems.

However, a diode laser hair removal is not a one-time event. For upper body hair removal, such as underarm and facial hair, one usually needs 8 to 10 sessions, without accounting for other factors like hair coarseness, skin types, etc. On the other hand, lower body hair removal such as bikini and leg can withstand only 5 to 6 sessions. The point is, permanent hair reduction will take a few sessions to achieve.

Another factor to consider before getting a laser treatment is skin tone. Typically, diode lasers are best for Filipino skin tones, which range from medium brown, light brown, and fair or light skin. Some diode laser treatments are not optimal for people with darker skin tones, so it’s best to consult your target clinic if you’re of the dark skin type to see if their technology is updated.

How to prep for your laser hair removal session

Now that you’ve finally decided a diode laser hair removal method is the best way to remove hair from your skin, it’s time to get into prepping. Make sure you’re serious about this treatment, because the before-preparation starts a month before your actual appointment. Here are some things you should know:

1. No plucking allowed

Permanent hair reduction via laser means your already-sensitive skin is going to be even more sensitive. It’s imperative one avoids plucking or waxing at least one month before the scheduled procedure in order to strengthen the area. Shaving is likewise prohibited for at least 5 days before your appointment.

2. Goodbye, Sun!

Another downside of a laser hair removal treatment is they cause your skin to be more photosensitive. As such, it’s best to avoid unnecessary sun exposure on the area you intend to have treated, whether it’s the upper lip, underarm, legs, or bikini area. This goes for your post-procedure care as well, so you’ll have to avoid those much-awaited beach trips for a few weeks. Sorry!

3. No peeling

While you’re at it, resist the urge to get any kind of peeling facial treatments or use creams that cause peeling like retinol. These creams will cause the skin to become over-sensitive to the laser energy.

What happens after diode laser hair removal?

No procedure is without its side effects! After all, proper care is required before and after your appointment. So, what exactly should you expect after your session?

One of the main side effects after a laser hair removal treatment is redness. You might notice your skin becoming sensitive and red after your session, but these don’t usually last long and are as temporary as the irritation you may feel after physical hair removal procedures like waxing.

Another thing to prepare for is change in pigmentation; people with light skin have reported mild hyperpigmentation in the affected areas, while those with darker skin appeared to have lighter spots. Again, this isn’t really a cause for concern, as it usually disappears after a few days.

And that’s it! We hope this guide has been helpful in your preparation for your upcoming treatment. Just follow the steps above and you’ll be golden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which laser hair removal machine is best?

Different laser hair removal treatments offer varying benefits. Here, we outline which one is the best for your hair color, skin tone, coarseness, and more.

IPL or intense pulsed light. IPL is perhaps one of the most popular hair removal methods in the Philippines next to a diode laser treatment. However, this method is actually not considered a laser treatment, as it uses a broad spectrum light technology on the hair and skin area. Critics believe that the unfocused energy can cause more harmful side effects such as blisters, as the light does not zero in on the hair follicle, unlike a diode laser. They’re also more typically suited for people with lighter skin tones, albeit also being great for people who have thick, dark hair.

Diode. As we mentioned above, a diode laser can cater to a wider range of skin colors and hair color, from dark hair to lighter hair.

At-home hair remover. Did you know you could achieve semi-permanent hair reduction right at your own home? And no, we don’t mean simply shaving. There are some great at-home hair removal devices that use IPL to reduce hair growth and prevent melanin production within the follicles over time. If you’re one of those people who is confident in their ability to perform the hair removal themselves, then we say go for it.
