3 Things to Think About Before Cutting Your Own Hair
The quarantine and social distancing regulations have been extended yet again. It might have been fun the first few weeks, binge-watching your favorite Netflix shows, oversleeping, and enjoying the couch-potato life. But now itโs just gone overboard. We havenโt seen the โoutside worldโ for about a month and itโs getting really boring at home.
And what do most girls do when theyโre bored? CUT THEIR OWN HAIR. Believe me, Iโve seen so many posts from my friends trying to cut their own bangs and end up regretting it. Lucky for them, itโs going to be another 2 weeks staying indoors, giving them time to move on from the haircut from hell.
It might be tempting to cut your own hair right now โ mainly because youโre bored, and also partly because youโre seeing those split ends but donโt really have the option to run to a salon at the moment.
But before you even grab that pair of scissors and start chopping away, you might want to take a step back and think about it first before you make an impulsive decision youโll regret for the next few months.
Do you really need a haircut?
First and foremost, you have to ask yourself if you really need a haircut or youโre just looking for something to do. I know what itโs like to crave for some thrill in your life during this quarantine, and canโt even count how many times Iโve fought off the thought of cutting my own hair.
Us girls like to change our looks every now and then. We get sick of our long hair one day, and then want it back after weโve had it chopped off. Thatโs just how it is. But haircuts arenโt really necessary to have every so often.
Ideally, we should be getting regular trims every 3-4 months to prevent split ends from dividing the hair shaft and causing irreparable damage to our hair strands. But if youโve been to a salon within that period, then put those scissors down because thereโs really no reason to cut your own hair right now.
Consider your other options
If you are, however, noticing that your hair is in dire need of a trip to the salon, e.g. really bad split ends, heat damage, or brittleness, then you might be thinking you have no other choice but to give yourself a trim.
But if youโre not really knowledgeable or experienced in cutting hair, I wouldnโt recommend that. Instead, you might want to consider your other options โ reparative treatments.
Invest in hair repair products to treat your split ends or dry locks in the meantime. These will help hold off the need to go to the salon โ and trust me, itโs the best you can do under the circumstances.
Also, itโs admittedly the best time to record that hair and makeup tutorial youโve been wanting to make, but you might want to lay off the hair styling products and curling irons to prevent causing further damage.
At least use the right tools
If you’re reading up to this point, and you still feel like it’s your duty to give yourself full-length bangs, then at least invest in the right pair of styling scissors to do it.
Never use kitchen scissors, as they’re not sharp enough to make neat cuts. They tend to push the hair forward as the blades hit your locks. That’s a surefire way to get crooked trims that will be hard to fix, even for a hair stylist.
Before you entertain those tempting thoughts on cutting your own hair, please, ladies, stay strong. This will all be over soon, and when that time comes, we all truly deserve a day-long pamper session.
