The double denim look has come a long way since the early 2000s, the era of matching celebrity outfits. Why we ever thought that was cute is just astounding. And of course, the winners that take the cake in worst matching denim-on-denim outfits are none other than Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. Although the Beckhams have also sported denim uniforms, theirs were never as questionable as JT and Britney. Admittedly, the pop stars do make for a great couple’s costumes on Halloween.

Forever making their mark on fashion history of faux pas, they’re a constant reminder of what not to do with denim. Some are still scarred by their style decisions, veering away from wearing more than one denim item at a time. But fear not, fashionistas. There are dozens of ways to wear denim outfits without committing a fashion crime. Plus, the double denim trend has since improved, thanks to style experts, celeb fashion icons and Instagram models. So don’t discredit denim-on-denim just yet.

For starters, wear them in different shades.

If you can’t imagine yourself wearing the same colored denim throughout, best to go for different denim washes. Lighter washes are usually better for accentuating assets while darker denim is good for concealing problem areas. But don’t be afraid to switch the shades up. White jeans are quite cute together with a medium blue chambray top.

Make use of your distressed jeans.

Break up the same shade of denim with another color.

Pair your embellished denim jacket with jeans.

Another way to add pizzazz to the Canadian tuxedo is by wearing a fabulous denim jacket. Whether it’s studded, embroidered, or customized with patches, the detail incorporates a different texture into the ensemble. Add some more fun to the getup by wearing an equally bedazzled top or heels. Doing so will make your denim on denim outfit anything but drab.

Be careful when working with acid wash jeans.

Bleached denim clothing poses some challenges, but they aren’t impossible to work with. Just be mindful of the way it’s been washed. For example, jeans with subtle fading should be all right with other denim pieces. However, the “tie dye” acid wash may not play well with other jean items. What you can do is pick another denim piece that matches the color of either the bleached part or the original wash. We’ve covered a lot of how-to’s on denim pieces, from finding the best jeans for you to new ways to wear your denim cut-offs. It’s safe to say that jeans are a crucial part of every woman’s wardrobe, manifesting in denim jackets, chambray shirts and denim skirts. In our last post dedicated to the fabric, we shared our tips on updating the ’90s denim mini, which is perhaps one of the more forgiving jeans trends compared to the rest. Longer jean skirts, on the other hand, are slightly harder to pull off, not to mention more restrictive in terms of movement. Thus, many of us end up fearing longer denim hems and sticking to what we know best.

But there is one celebrity that has embraced the retro style instead of shying away from it. Julia Montes, who is currently in Thailand with her mother, recently posted her #OOTD for the Summer Palace. Featuring a calf-length chambray skirt paired with a black tee, hat and sandals, she makes it look so easy to wear that much denim.

And the truth is, once you get over the fact that it covers more than your denim mini, it is actually that easy to wear a full length jean skirt. As long as you keep the following in mind, there really is no reason to be afraid of this denim style.

Find a skirt with an A-line silhouette

When working with a heavy textile, shape is key. A denim skirt doesn’t hold up well when it comes in a sheath silhouette. What you want to find something with a defined structure, otherwise the denim will look dowdy. A-line silhouettes are flattering on every body type and will never be weighed down by a fabric like denim.
