I never used to like wearing false eyelashes.

First of all, I thought they were too heavy on my lids. Second, I always found myself tearing up after a couple of hours from wearing them, so after the first time I experimented with them, I just completely ditched them and focused on naturally thickening and lengthening my lashes instead.

But with the influence of beauty gurus of YouTube, I thought I’d try them out again.

After watching makeup tutorial after makeup tutorial, I discovered that I committed several faux pas when I first started out, which explained why I had such an unpleasant experience. Now that I had racked up all this knowledge on applying false lashes, it was time to put it to the test.

With all the tips I picked up along the way, I saw major improvements in adjusting the falsies according to the size of my eye, applying the falsies, as well as making them blend in with my natural eyelashes. And now that I have near-perfected the falsie application, I realize how much of an impact they make on their own. They really open up my eyes, and on days when I’m too lazy to wear any makeup, I find myself simply just putting my lashes on and automatically feeling read for the day.

If you’re ready to take a stab at wearing false lashes, I do want to let you know that it does take a little trial and error; however, with the following tips, you’ll be mastering the falsie look in no time.

Here’s what you need to do:

Choose Strip Over Individual

While individual fake lashes are in many ways easier to apply, they do take much longer than the more common (and often preferred) strip lash. Not only are they individual ones time consuming to put on, they’re just as time consuming to take off. It’s already irritating enough putting the glue on each of the bits, and if you’re anything like me, you want the ability to remove them in one go.

When in Doubt, Choose Natural Over Dramatic

If you are inexperienced with fake lashes, it’s always best not to go too crazy the first time around. Dramatic pairs tend to get pretty heavy, especially those with smaller eyes, so best to start with a more natural looking pair first. After some practice, you can move on to more dramatic looking styles

Apply Mascara Before Falsies

You’re probably thinking that having falsies was supposed to eliminate the need for mascara. But the thing is that in order for your natural lashes to blend in with the fake ones, mascara is the way to go, so curl your lashes and use mascara beforehand. You may also apply another coat after putting your lashes on.

Trim Before Gluing

Everyone has a different eye shape, and rarely does a pair of fake lashes fit onto one’s eye perfectly. Before gluing them down, try them on, and them trim the outer edges of the lashes as necessary.

Some people also like to further cut the lashes in half to make the strip lash blend more naturally with your lash line, though that’s just more for preference.

Be Careful with the Amount of Glue You Use

Glue can be a little tricky. You want to apply just the right amount of glue so that it will dry quickly enough but still hold you falsies well. All you need is a thin layer of the adhesive. If your glue comes with a brush, then great. If not, simply place a small blob of glue on one corner of the fake lash, then spread across the strip. Blow on the glue to help it dry faster, which is an important step so that you don’t get adhesive in your eye. After about a minute, you can place the falsie on your lash line. You can choose to use tweezers to help with application, or simply use your own fingers. Either way is fine, but tweezers do make it easier to make adjustments in your placement.

Remember to work one lash at a time, meaning don’t apply the glue to both lashes at the same time.

If Unsuccessful with the Glue, Opt for Pre-Glued Lashes

If you can’t seem to work with the glue, the next best thing is buy lashes at already have the adhesive on them. Then you can trim according to your eye shape and place on your lash line without having to wait for the glue to dry beforehand.

Or Try Magnetic Lashes

If you want to get rid of the whole gluing process, there’s always the option of magnetic lashes.

There are two variations: lashes that attach the each other, and a magnetic liner and lash combo. Either one are great alternatives to the glue, which might come really handy for those with sensitive eyes as well as contact wearers.

Five-free nail polish, clean beauty, cruelty-free ingredients—there seems to be a lot of definitions out there when it comes to greener beauty brands and routines. To make sure you understand what you’re buying into, here is a list of definitions often used to describe ethical standards and sustainability in the cosmetics world.

All-natural or Green Beauty

A synonym or organic beauty, anything green or all-natural simply means the product is sourced from natural ingredients. Think of the ingredients as nature derivatives in their purest and most effective forms. Though a label can say “all natural,” it still might contain a small percentage of healthy and safe synthetic ingredients.

Clean Beauty

Clean beauty is a broader term that usually refer to ingredients being non-toxic and not harmful for the betterment of one’s health. The ingredients can be natural or synthetic.

A clean beauty brand must be verified by a third party.

Cruelty-free

A cruelty-free product means that it has not been tested on animals on all stages of production. Although there are a lot of questions with this term considering cruelty-free does not necessarily mean harm-free. It merely pertains to the fact that there hasn’t been any animal testing in the entire process. So unless it also specifies that it’s vegan, there’s a possibility that a cruelty-free product still has animal products obtained inhumanely. It may also contain palm oil.

Organic and Certified Organic

An organic beauty product is free from chemicals, preservatives, artificial or synthetic colors, artificial fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and manufactured herbicides.

In order for a product to be considered organic, at least 70% of ingredients have to be organic. To be a certified organic products, at least 95% percent of the ingredients must be organic, which has to be confirmed by a third party who will then provide the certified organic seal.

Both organic and certified organic products may contain non-toxic synthetic ingredients, with the former making up to 30% and latter up to 5% of ingredients.

Palm Oil Free

A less common term used in cosmetics is “palm oil free.” Evidently, it means that a product doesn’t contain palm oil or any of its derivatives. Why that’s important is because of how destructive the production process is on the rainforest, as it destroys the whole ecosystem, affecting the home of many a specie, essentially rendering them homeless and left for dead. But like the rest of the terms, something that it palm oil free doesn’t necessarily mean it’s organic or completely environmentally friendly.

Vegan

A vegan product is one without animal products, but the term vegan on its own doesn’t necessarily mean it is organic or palm oil free. In fact, it doesn’t even mean that it’s cruelty free, so it’s important that people understand that “vegan” is not an all encompassing term

3-, 5-, 7- and 9-free Nail Polish

When you see a number followed by “free” for nail polish, that means the formula doesn’t contain that certain number of toxic chemicals common in polishes. The ethical standard these days is 5-free, but many brands are still struggling to remove the toxic trio out of their products, because the three chemicals are normally included to reduce cracking and improve flexibility.

For a product or a brand to be completely ethical and sustainable, beauty companies have to look beyond the formula. They have to consider the entire process, such as production, business practices, delivery, and what they do with the profits. If a beauty brand wants to be sustainable, they should adopt the following:

• Packaging that is either recyclable, reusable (like bottles that can be refilled at the store), compostable, or made from recycled materials.
• Business practices where they pay their workers good wages and pay suppliers fare prices for raw goods and materials, as well as working with suppliers that are committed to safe working conditions and positive environmental and social impact.
• Business practices that minimize their carbon footprint and efficient water and energy management
• Sending a portion of the proceeds to charity

Using Your Beauty Blender

Dampen your sponge

Since a beauty blender is a sponge, it’ll soak up product very easily. In order to maximize your makeup products, soak your sponge in water before using it. Some beauty gurus like to dampen their sponges with facial or makeup mist so that you’re adding extra moisture into your makeup products. And in case the sponge dries out, keep a cup of water handy, or simply use your mist to dampen it again before use.

Use a damp sponge with powder products as well, as the wet sponge allows for more control for where you place your powders.

Use a bouncing motion for blending

If you find that your foundation and concealer aren’t blending all that well, chances are that you’re not applying your makeup properly. Instead of swiping product across your face, use a light bouncing motion to help fill pores and creases, as well as eliminate lines you normally see when wiping foundation onto your skin. Bouncing allows the product to blend with the surface of your skin rather than just sit on top of it.

Drag for contouring

When there’s a stubborn stain you can’t seem to get rid of, let your beauty blender soak overnight in water and cleanser or makeup tool cleaner. The stain should be easier to clean in the morning.

Never microwave it or use boiling water

Whatever you do, never use boiling water to clean your beauty blenders. Same goes for microwaving it in water. The hot temperature may help kill the germs, but it’ll also melt the sponge. Cleaning a beauty blender with the proper cleanser and lukewarm water is good enough.

Storing Your Beauty Blender

Store it in a breathable bag

Leaving your beauty blender in a dark, closed makeup bag is the worst thing you can do. You want your sponge to breathe and fully dry out, so keep it in the original plastic casing with holes if you’ve got the original beauty blender. If you have another makeup sponge, keep it in an organza bag or another breathable pouch.

Replace every three months

No matter how often or little that you use it, or how diligent you are about cleaning it, a beauty blender needs to be replaced every three months. The sponge will wear and tear, and keeping it longer than the recommended three months is just a health hazard.

Do you ever read the label of your beauty products and wonder what the heck is half, if not most, of the stuff they put into your shampoo and perfume?

The majority of the ingredients look like a bunch of made up words to the average person. Unless you’re well-versed in cosmetic ingredients, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell if a certain brand was including harsh chemicals into their formula.

And to be perfectly honest, a lot of companies take advantage of this lack of knowledge, filling everyday makeup and toiletries with ingredients that are destructive to your health, all so to preserve the product, or have the right texture, color, scent or effect, despite the potential side effects.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to read the labels of cosmetics, but reading through all of that doesn’t mean much if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Here are some of the most harmful (yet common) ingredients to watch out for in makeup, skin, body and hair care products.

Benzophenone

There are several variations of benzophenone, but you can tell if a product contains it if the label lists the exact word, BP followed by a number, or words with “benzone.” Benzophenone is included to protect products with sunscreen from UV light, and it’s been linked to cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, etc.

Butylated Compounds BHA & BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are both used as preservatives in cosmetics, personal care products, as well as food. They’re linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, organ-system toxicity and irritations.

Coal Tar

You would never suspect that coal tar would be a common ingredient in personal care, but the reality is that many brands use it to treat dandruff and other itchy, scaly skin conditions. Studies have found that exposure to and application of coal tar can lead to skin tumors and neurological damage.

Formaldehyde and FRPs

You’ve probably already heard of formaldehyde being in nail polish and hair products. Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs) are also found in shampoos for babies and adults, and they’re used to prevent bacterial growth in water-based products. But did you know that formaldehyde is a colorless, strong-smelling gas that can be absorbed through the skin and has been linked to allergic skin reactions and even cancer? Formaldehyde is easy to spot, but FRPs come in different names, so be sure to look up every ingredient on labels.

HEALTH CONCERNS: Cancer, skin irritation

Fragrance

It’s such a broad term to include in a list of ingredients, considering there are a bunch of chemical compounds that result in the product’s scent. Used interchangeably with “perfume,” “parfum,” “aroma” and “essential oil blend,” there’s no clear indication whether the fragrance was made with natural or synthetic materials. Some studies have indicated that chemicals (like acetaldehyde and benzophenone) used in fragrances have been linked to allergies and sensitivities, and even worse, cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is another toxic chemical that Pinays and other women of color are exposed to through their products. A common ingredient in skin lighteners, hydroquinone has been linked to cancer, organ system toxicity and respiratory tract irritation. It’s sometimes used in cleansers, moisturizers, conditioners and nail products.

Parabens

You might notice that some products will say they’re paraben-free. What exactly are parabens, you might ask. Normally, you won’t see parabens as its own ingredient, since there are many varieties but all contain the suffix -paraben. Found in lots of bath products, parabens are essentially preservatives. While they do prevent the growth of microbes, they are also chemicals that disrupt your endocrine system. Not only that, but they can be absorbed through your skin, blood and digestive system.

Phthalates

There are a few kinds of phthalates:

• Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) – common in nail polish to avoid cracking
• Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) – common in hair sprays to avoid stiffness
• Diethyl phthalate (DEP) – helps scents last longer, often not listed since it’ll fall under “fragrance”
• Di-2-ethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) – common in eyelash glue

There is a reason why phthalates have been banned in cosmetics in the European Union, and that’s because they have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity.

Toluene

Would you want a beauty product that shares the same ingredient as adhesives, gasoline, paint thinners and rubber? Toluene is toxic, but it’s included in hair dyes and nail polishes because offers more pigment and gives a smoother finish with the colors. Just like you would with gasoline, exposure to the chemical can cause dizzy spells, headaches and even cracked skin. Long-term exposure is linked with developmental and reproductive toxicity, irritations, and respiratory complications.

Triclosan and Triclocarban

Triclosan (TSC) and triclocarban (TCC) are used for its antibacterial purposes, which is found in a variety of products. However, they’re pretty controversial since they have the ability to penetrate your skin and end up in your urine! This is a major concern that may lead to endocrine disruption, environmental toxicity, and the emergence of trisclosan-resistant bacteria.

So remember this: Don’t just buy a product because your friend recommends it. It never hurts to check out the label and do a little research to make sure these beauty products are safe for you to use!
