The Saalt cup is a reusable menstrual cup that offers several benefits:

Comfortable Fit for Everyday Wear (Compared to Firmer Cups)

For everyday wear, it can be the best cup to use because of its ultra-soft silicone, offering an unparalleled level of comfort. Designed to adapt to your body’s natural contours, this soft cup ensures a snug, secure fit for both light and heavy menstruation days.

Whether you’re active or resting, its flexibility prevents discomfort, making it an excellent choice for new users and those sensitive to firmer cups. This super comfortable design reduces bladder sensitivity cramping, ensuring you can wear it confidently throughout the day.

Enjoy Extended Wear Time with Zero Issues

One of the standout benefits of the Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup is its ability to provide hours of leak-free protection. This feature ensures you can go about your daily routine or sleep overnight without worry.

The secure seal formed by the cup prevents leaks, even during heavy flow, while allowing you to wear it for extended periods. For new users, mastering the fold and insert technique may take a few cycles, but once you do, the Saalt Cup becomes an indispensable tool for managing your period.

Hypoallergenic Material for Sensitive Bodies

The Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup is both hypoallergenic and cruelty-free. It’s free from BPA and latex, ensuring compatibility with sensitive skin and bodies. This makes it the best menstrual cup for individuals prone to irritation from traditional pads and tampons.

The Saalt soft cup design also promotes less pain during use compared to other cups, enhancing your overall period experience. For optimal care, wash the cup with oil-free soap and cold water before each use, ensuring it remains safe and sanitary.

Are Saalt menstrual cups safe?

One of the questions encountered when doing this Saalt cup review is its safety. To answer: Saalt menstrual cups are considered safe for menstrual management.

They are crafted from medical-grade silicone, hypoallergenic material free from BPA, latex, and toxins, ensuring compatibility with sensitive bodies. This high-quality silicone is biocompatible, meaning it does not cause adverse reactions when in contact with body tissues.

The general medical consensus supports the safety of menstrual cups, including those from Saalt, when used as directed. They do not disrupt the vaginal flora, maintaining the natural pH and reducing the risk of infections.

Additionally, menstrual cups have been associated with a lower risk of toxic shock syndrome compared to tampons. Proper hygiene practices are essential to ensure safety. Saalt recommends sanitizing the cup before first use and between cycles by boiling it in water for 4–5 minutes.

During menstruation, the cup should be emptied and cleaned at least every 12 hours to maintain optimal hygiene.

When you purchase a Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup, you’ll receive:

One Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup in your preferred size (small or regular size)

A reusable carry bag for convenient storage

A user manual with educational opportunities on proper use and care

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Saalt Cup

Selecting the appropriate size for your Saalt Cup is crucial for comfort, effectiveness, and ease of use. Saalt makes two primary sizes: small and regular. The size you decide on depends on factors like cervix height, flow level, and your experience with menstrual cups.

Cervix height is an important factor when choosing your cup size. To determine this, insert your clean finger into your vaginal canal during your period:

Low Cervix: If you can feel your cervix easily, a small cup is recommended for a better fit.

High Cervix: If your cervix is difficult to reach, opt for a regular-size cup. The Saalt Cup’s design is ideal for those with a high cervix as it ensures a secure and comfortable fit.

Your menstrual flow plays a role in your decision:

Light to Normal Flow: The small Saalt Soft Cup is designed for lighter days or users with a smaller canal.

Heavy: Their size Regular is their version of Large. This Saalt Cup can hold more fluid and is ideal for managing heavy period days effectively.

If this is your first cycle using a menstrual cup, consider starting with the small Saalt soft menstrual Cup, which is softer and easier to handle for first-time users. This way, you’ll have an idea for your next cycle, and you’ll get accustomed to how the cup folds, pops open, and fits within your body.

Experienced users familiar with the insert and seal process might prefer the regular size for added capacity and life-long use. Saalt cups come with thoughtful details to enhance your period experience. The soft silicone material and fold options make insertion easier.

Ultimately, your choice comes down to your body’s unique needs. If you’re unsure, Saalt’s website provides educational opportunities to guide your decision-making. After choosing a size, give it a few cycles to fully adjust and determine what works best for you. A well-chosen Saalt Cup can transform your period care, making it eco-friendly, comfortable, and effective for years to come.

The Saalt Soft Menstrual Cup is available on various online platforms. For reliable purchases, you can find it on the Saalt website or trusted e-commerce sites like Amazon. Ensure you’re buying from verified sellers to guarantee product authenticity.

OUR VERDICT

After trying the OrganiCup menstrual cup, I decided to give another menstrual cup a try, just to give me a better perspective on these alternatives to pads and tampons.

What I like about this product is that they’re ideal to use for a few hours. As with the other reviews from cup users, they can last for several hours. I’m unsure if it’s the same with the small cup, though.

The Saalt Soft menstrual cup offers a balance of comfort, flexibility, and sustainability. Its soft silicone design caters to users with bladder sensitivity and those new to menstrual cups. Whether you’re tackling a normal or heavy flow, this cup delivers excellent performance with a minimal learning curve.

While firmer cups might be better for some, the Saalt Soft remains a standout choice for those prioritizing comfort.

If you want to prevent staining, I suggest using a panty liner. It’s also wise to consider the C Fold, which has a wider point of insertion. I can say it will change your life, especially when you have a heavy flow.

Insert: Relax your lower abdominal muscles and insert the cup into the vaginal canal.

Check the Seal: Ensure the cup is sealed properly by rotating it slightly.

Empty and Wash: After 8-12 hours, remove the cup, empty the blood, wash with mild soap, and reinsert.

Pro tip: Boil the cup before and after each period for added cleanliness. Make sure that you have the right cup size. Better yet, you can use a reusable panty liner for added protection.

OUR VERDICT

Now, let’s head to my OrganiCup review. I’ve heard horror stories about the use of reusable cups. I must admit I was not a huge fan. Mainly because I’ve also tried most tampons, and they often get soaked after a few minutes.

My final thoughts and honest review on this is that it is a great choice for those seeking a sustainable and comfortable period solution. Its design, durability, and user-friendly features make it one of the best menstrual cups available.

The first time I used it, I almost regretted going out because I dreaded having to change in the toilet. It can be quite a challenge when I have to change in public bathrooms. They’re great if you don’t mind getting blood on your hands while cleaning them while you’re in a toilet or bathroom.

Personally, I use reusable pads. While I tried this product, I still wore period underwear the first time I used it, just to be sure, especially since I have heavy periods.

While there’s a slight learning curve, I was able to get the sweet spot, and it worked perfectly. Now, I must say it’s the best invention for women! They are great for reducing waste, getting more savings, and providing superior comfort, which far outweighs the initial adjustment period. It’s a good way to save money and contribute to the environment.

Hormonal Imbalances and Their Effects on Beauty

Hormones are crucial in maintaining various bodily functions, including those that contribute to our appearance. An imbalance in hormones can lead to several noticeable changes in beauty, impacting everything from skin health to hair and even body weight.

In this article, we will explore how hormonal fluctuations affect your beauty and offer tips on restoring balance for a healthier, more vibrant appearance.

What Causes Hormonal Imbalances?

Hormonal imbalances can be triggered by various factors, including stress, poor diet, aging, pregnancy, menopause, and medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders.

Stress, in particular, is known to increase the production of cortisol, a stress hormone that can disrupt the balance of other hormones. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as poor sleep, lack of exercise, and an imbalanced diet can also contribute to hormonal fluctuations.

Effects of Hormonal Imbalances on Beauty

On Skin

One of the most noticeable effects of hormonal imbalances is on the skin. Changes in hormone levels can lead to acne breakouts, dryness, or an overly oily complexion.

For instance, during puberty or pregnancy, an increase in androgen hormones can lead to acne, while a drop in estrogen levels during menopause may cause dryness and a loss of elasticity.

Estrogen helps to maintain skin moisture, thickness, and overall smoothness, so when levels drop, the skin may become more prone to wrinkles and fine lines. On the other hand, a spike in testosterone can lead to increased sebum production, which can clog pores and lead to acne.

On Hair

Hormones also play a major role in hair health. Imbalances can lead to hair thinning, hair loss, or excessive hair growth in unusual areas.

For example, a drop in estrogen levels during menopause is often associated with hair thinning and slower hair growth. Similarly, imbalances in thyroid hormones, whether from an overactive or underactive thyroid, can cause hair to become brittle or thin.

Excess androgens, which are male hormones present in both men and women, can also cause excessive hair growth on the face and body, particularly in women. This condition, known as hirsutism, can be distressing and often requires treatment to restore balance.

On Body Weight and Shape

Hormonal fluctuations can also impact your body weight and shape. When thyroid hormones are out of balance, it can affect metabolism, leading to either unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight. In addition, insulin resistance, which is often linked to imbalances in cortisol and other hormones, can result in fat accumulation around the belly area.

For women, imbalances in estrogen and progesterone can affect fat distribution, particularly during menstruation or menopause. As a result of hormonal shifts, women may notice that they store more fat in their abdominal area, thighs, or hips.

How to Restore Hormonal Balance

If you’re experiencing the effects of hormonal imbalances on your beauty, there are several steps you can take to help restore balance:

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can support hormonal health. Certain foods, like those high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, can help regulate hormone production.

Manage Stress

Stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can lower cortisol levels and help balance other hormones.

Exercise Regularly

Physical activity can help balance hormones, particularly those related to metabolism and stress. Aim for a combination of cardio and strength training.

Consult a Healthcare Provider

If you suspect a serious hormonal imbalance, it’s essential to see a healthcare provider. They can perform tests to determine the root cause and recommend treatments, such as hormone therapy, lifestyle changes, or medications.

Consider Natural Supplements

Some herbs and supplements, like maca root, ashwagandha, and evening primrose oil, are thought to support hormonal balance, but it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional before taking anything.

Understand Hormonal Imbalances and Their Impact

Hormonal imbalances can significantly impact your beauty and appearance, but with the right approach, it is possible to restore balance and regain a healthy, glowing look. By understanding the causes and effects of these imbalances, you can take proactive steps to manage your hormones and address issues related to skin, hair, and body weight.

Remember, hormonal health is closely tied to overall wellness, so focusing on a balanced lifestyle can improve both your inner health and outward beauty.

Using the Sinaya Cup is a straightforward and user-friendly process, providing a convenient and sustainable alternative to traditional menstrual products. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using the Sinaya Cup:

Sterilize the Cup

Before the initial use, it’s crucial to ensure the Sinaya Cup is clean and sterile. To achieve this, boil the cup in water for a few minutes. This step helps eliminate any potential bacteria and ensures the cup is ready for safe use.

Insertion

When ready to use, fold the Sinaya Cup to make insertion easier. There are various folding techniques, such as the C-fold or the punch-down fold. Once folded, gently insert the cup into the vaginal canal, making sure it is positioned comfortably. The cup will naturally unfold inside your vagina and form a seal against the vaginal walls.

Wear Time

The Sinaya Cup can collect menstrual blood for up to 12 hours, depending on the individual’s menstrual cycles and flow. On lighter days, it lasts for more than 10 hours, but on heavier flows, it might last up to 4 hours before you experience leaks and minimal blood starts leaking out. Wear a panty liner or thin pads during heavier period days.

This extended wear time provides convenience and flexibility, allowing users to go about their daily activities without the need for frequent changes. It’s important to empty and clean the cup as needed, especially on heavier flow days.

Removal

Removing the Sinaya Cup is a simple process. Pinch the base of the cup to break the seal gently, making it easier to pull the cup out. Empty the contents into the toilet, rinse the cup with water, and it’s ready for reinsertion. It’s important to follow the recommended cleaning guidelines to maintain hygiene and ensure the cup’s effectiveness.

The Sinaya Cup’s user-friendly design and extended wear time contribute to its appeal, offering a reliable and comfortable menstrual care option for those looking to make a sustainable and practical choice.

You can barely feel it after inserting, and, last but not least, no rashes! I have sensitive skin and body, so after I insert and remove disposable tampons, I have a burning sensation in my body. I have the same problem when using sanitary pads. I experience blood leaking out, and I have rashes on my derriere. Sanitary pads are also uncomfortable to wear.

Now, let’s be real about the cons, but I’ll tell you, there’s no direct con on the Sinaya Cup itself. The only hitch with menstrual cups, in general, is that they can be a bit of a hassle to clean, especially when you’re changing in public places.

But hey, it’s a small price to pay for the planet, right? And yeah, there’s a bit of a learning curve, but once you figure out the best size and technique for insertion, it’s smooth sailing from there. So, here’s to a period game-changer that’s got my back, literally!

Taking care of ourselves can be quite challenging. We are supposed to do it, but it often ends up being a chore and not something we feel like doing. Remembering to take care of yourself and managing your overall health and well-being properly can be challenging, but it is well worth the effort.

In this busy world, you may feel that practicing self-care is not your priority, so you might not know how to take proper care of yourself. Don’t worry, because we got you covered! Here are some self-care tips so that you can feel more comfortable and focused on what’s important.

What is self-care?

According to World Health Organization, self-care is the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.

Self-care is the process of taking care of oneself with behaviors that promote health and avoid health problems. In other words, it is about being healthy and taking your own health and wellness into consideration when making decisions that affect you. It can also be about giving yourself the time, space, and attention that you need to help you feel better about yourself.

Self-care is not just about taking a pamper day or going on a nice holiday. You know when you feel like you need to be a little bit more proactive with your health, whether it’s getting a flu shot, taking stress relief activities, eating a little healthier during your lunch break, or having enough sleep. Self-care doesn’t only mean hitting the gym, although that can definitely help, too.

There are many forms self-care can take. Looking out for your immune system and overall well-being count as a good self-care routine so you can be at your very best. Here are the aspects you need to consider on how to take care of yourself:

Physical Health

Your physical health is one of your most important assets. While some parts of your body can’t be changed, making sure that your health is at the bay will always be helpful. With well-practiced physical self-care, you can achieve improved immune function and stress management.

When looking at physical self-care, it’s important to remember that everyone has a set of physical needs and desires. Some people might have certain self-care strategies that are non-negotiable, such as the need for a hot bath or massage. There is no one size fits all rhythm for a physical self-care routine. However, there are ways that can guide you when it comes to setting your own personal goals and curating the best physical activity for you.

Good physical activity can help you, especially with your heart health and blood pressure, as well as in stress reduction.

Social Health

Research shows that socialization has been found to have a stronger effect on the immune system, longevity, and overall health. But, often in today’s fast-paced culture, it can be hard to make time for friends, or we simply neglect our relationships when life gets busy.

Social connection is incredibly important but it is easy to take them for granted. In fact, they can be one of the most difficult things to cultivate and maintain as you age. If you have never taken the time to learn how to have close relationships with others, now is the time to do so. It may be hard work at first, but over time, social self-care will become second nature.

Taking time out of your schedule for quarterly meetings or leisure activities helps build those important bonds between you and others.

Mental Health

Our thoughts are powerful; it influences our well-being in many ways. In order to be mentally healthy, it is important to focus on the things that make you happy and keep your mind clear of negativity. As such, it’s a great idea to spend time thinking about the best aspects of life and the people, places, and things that bring you joy and improve your self-esteem.

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as living with or without a mental health condition.

Emotional Health

All of us are struggling with uncomfortable emotions. Whether it be grief or anger or sadness, we all know it’s hard to get through. Feeling overwhelmed, stressed and anxious is all too common. Most of us deal with stress in one form or another at some point in our lives.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everyday life and struggle to cope with difficult situations. This can have a lasting impact on not just our relationship with ourselves, but also on those around us.

Our emotional well-being is just as important as others. Emotional health is about learning to manage your emotions and is an important skill that you can use in all aspects of life. Meanwhile, emotional self-care is having healthy coping skills to deal with our emotions and reduce stress.

Spiritual Health

Nurture your spirit. That might sound like an odd thing to say, considering that the word itself has a religious connotation.

A spiritual practice can take many forms. In fact, it’s probably what makes spirituality so diverse. While there are plenty of things that fit into this category, the idea is that cultivating our spirit doesn’t have to be religious at all.

Spiritual self-care is not limited to attending a religious service. It’s about a deeper connection with your soul and a more fulfilling way to live your life. Like any kind of exercise or activity, you need to find the routine that works best for you. One of the best spiritual self-care ideas is to meditate to reduce stress and focus on yourself.

In addition, research suggests that spiritual self-care has multiple wellness benefits, so it is an important aspect of your life as well.

Why is self-care important?

Questions like this one are posed all the time. You may want to know why self-care is important for your own well-being, or whether it has health benefits.

Self-care is considered a crucial part of staying healthy. It can be challenging to be well, but there are several proven ways to accomplish it. Self-care is an important part of maintaining good health, and we should all do our best to make sure we’re doing all that we can for the sake of our well-being.

We often neglect this most precious aspect of life as we develop our careers, social lives, and other commitments, but there’s no reason we shouldn’t make self-care a priority. Do not feel guilty if you feel you are enjoying your self-indulgence. You have earned a ticket to enjoy your alone time.

How can I take care of myself?

Self-care routines can be beneficial for your day-to-day life. There are plenty of ways how to take care of yourself. Here are some of the tips and health benefits for your self-care journey.

Bathe regularly

Good personal hygiene is essential to promoting good health. Aside from being a form of preventive care, it can help keep infections at bay. Besides, regular bathing and showering help clear away the dirt, oils, and other debris that can be deposited on your skin and scalp over the course of a day.

Eat a healthy diet

It is recommended that we should eat a wide variety of food. It could be eating more fruits, veggies, and whole grain products. A healthy diet will help in providing all the nutrients needed by the human body.

While eating healthy is something we can all start tomorrow and take the first step toward, you should also assess what your body needs to create a self-care diet.

Exercise regularly

It’s no secret that being active is good for you. The concept of being active is quite simple: you move your body and do something.

Being active can have multiple benefits as it can boost your mood, release tension, and make you feel better mentally. It also lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Exercising can be difficult, but it is a form of self-care that will greatly pay off if you stick with it.

Talk to someone you trust

When you’re going through a tough time, one of the best and most effective things you can do to feel better is to talk to someone you trust. Talking has been proven to help people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

You may be thinking that talking means telling all your problems so they have no chance of solving themselves or becoming better, but that’s not what it means. You can speak with a friend, a family member, or someone else who’s been in your shoes before because they will listen to what you have to say.

Talking with someone can also help you with your emotional and mental health. It does not only promote self-care, but it also cultivates your relationship with other people.

Create a to-do list or a journal

There are a lot of people out there who can’t seem to deal with their feelings. They just want them all bottled up inside. Make no mistake, this is a really unhealthy way to deal with things. It’s OK to let some of those emotions out while they’re still fresh in your mind!

One of the effective ways toward self-care is writing things down. If you want to deal with overwhelming emotion, one of the best ways to do so is through writing. Experimenting with different ways of putting things into words will help you gain clarity and perspective on what’s really going on inside your head. Write about whatever’s going on in your life at the time. Don’t worry about whether what you write is perfect or not.

Get adequate sleep

Sleep is vital to the body and mind. Without adequate sleep, you may feel tired, irritable, and unfocused. The human body needs time to regenerate from the day’s activities, and it also plays an important role in making sure that you have the energy you need to complete daily tasks.

It is a no-brainer that everyone needs a good sleep. There are many different types of sleep but generally, they can be divided into two: light sleep and deep sleep. No matter what age you are or what your level of activity is, everyone needs about seven hours of uninterrupted sleep each night.

Take a mindfulness training

Meditation is a practice that may seem foreign to some. Maybe you’ve tried it before and gave up because you didn’t know what to expect. Or maybe you didn’t like it. However, meditation is something everyone can benefit from.

Meditation is an essential part of living a healthier, calmer lifestyle as it can largely impact our spiritual, mental, and emotional health. This can also improve your energy levels and chances of having a more positive outlook on life.

Sit quietly for a few minutes as you meditate. Meditation can help with your chronic pain, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, anxiety, and depression. The benefits don’t stop there. Meditation has also been shown to improve your cognitive skills and even speed up your learning process.

Take a yoga class (or hit the gym!)

Yoga is an amazing way to get in shape, the same as going to the gym. Whether you’re looking for a way to learn more about your body, exercise, or get relief from chronic pain, yoga is a popular option. Taking yoga classes can help you with your mental and physical health. They can also help you increase your energy levels and sleep quality.

Hitting the gym on the other hand is more systematic. Review your self-care plan with your trainer to achieve your health goals.

Hit the sun and stroll outside

There are so many people getting stressed out by various things. Hitting the sun, walking outside, and getting fresh air can help aid stress.

We often hear people say that getting some fresh air makes people feel better. Spending time outside can help you manage stress, lower your blood pressure, and live in the moment. Exposure to the sun can produce serotonin, a natural mood booster. A great form of self-care, walking outside also fosters creativity and enhances cognitive abilities and focus.

Set healthy boundaries

Healthy boundaries are much needed to establish and maintain one’s sense of self-worth and identity. We set our boundaries with others in our lives as it protects us from being taken advantage of and allows us to take care of ourselves.

In setting boundaries, remember to be systematic. Review the lifestyle you have and establish healthy boundaries. By doing this, we build trust with ourselves, our loved ones, and other people, both personally and professionally.

If you are dealing with spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, and emotional health problems, a doctor’s appointment can help with your medically-reviewed self-care plan.

Final Note

“Take care of yourself!”

That sounds like a simple and possibly even obvious statement, right? However, many people still struggle to take care of themselves well enough. I often hear women say, “I am overwhelmed by the things I need to do on daily basis, so I don’t know how to practice self-care.”

Self-care is a way to take care of yourself without depending on anyone else. Having a good self-care routine is not selfishness as it allows you to focus more on yourself. You will feel better in the long run when you know what self-care practices work best for your own health.

We need to remember that there are many healthy ways to take care of ourselves without neglecting our responsibilities. There are so many things that contribute to a healthier and longer life, from eating and sleeping habits to exercising routine and even meditation.

In order for us to achieve a fulfilling life, we need to look out for our well-being first by using proper self-care plans. That being said, spending time with ourselves using different self-care practices and newly-found self-knowledge can help us boost our overall wellness.

How To Use Tampons: A Guide for Beginners

Using a tampon for the first time can be very intimidating, especially if you’re not exactly sure how to do it. We’re here to give a detailed guide on everything you need to know about using tampons as a beginner. Let’s get into it!

What are tampons?

Tampons are single-use menstrual products meant to absorb period blood and menstrual fluid. They’re made of either cotton, rayon, or a blend of the two, and can come with an applicator or without.

Unlike napkins, tampons are inserted into the vagina and need to be replaced every six to eight hours. While that may seem scary if you’re new to using a tampon, don’t worry – they’re completely safe and undergo rigorous testing by the FDA before they can be sold! Plus, the risk of contracting toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is incredibly rare. Apart from that, there is not much to worry about.

Those with an applicator contain two barrels, one outer applicator that covers the tampon and helps you insert it easier, and another smaller tube within it that helps you remove the applicator. If this sounds confusing, don’t worry – we’ll explain it further below.

The tampon itself is cylindrical shaped and absorbent – depending on the brand, size, and absorbency, it can hold six to eight grams of blood.

Why Use a Tampon?

According to Healthline, tampons are currently the most popular period product. And with good reason, because there are plenty of advantages to using a tampon during your red days. Let’s talk about them.

Discreetness

Menstrual pads can look quite bulky if you’re wearing tight garments. When you’re wearing yoga pants or a body con dress, the outline of a pad can make you feel self-conscious. But because tampons are inserted into the vagina, leaving only the string outside, and there’s no risk of it being seen no matter how tight fitting or thin your clothes are. Fashion dilemma averted.

They Stay in Place

Again, since tampons stay inside your vaginal opening, you won’t have to worry about accidentally displacing it while going about your day. This makes them perfect for athletes, runners, and anyone who moves a lot.

You can swim in them

Even though water pressure can reduce the flow of our period, it doesn’t actually stop when we go into water. But how can one enjoy pool parties during red days? Use a tampon or a menstrual cup!

To be clear, there’s a slim chance you’re actually going to leak in the water, but you will be going in and out of the pool. Simply wearing pads is a no-no, and having to use a new one in between swim sessions can be a huge inconvenience.

With a tampon or a cup, however, you won’t have to think about all of that. Once you’ve popped your tampon in, it’s only a matter of changing it every six hours. You’re free to swim as many laps as you desire as well as take a break from the water without leaking.

Which is better: pads or tampons?

Growing up in the Philippines, sanitary pads are the most common period product. But that doesn’t mean other methods aren’t worth a try!

If you’re thinking about switching from pads to tampons, here are some advantages to consider:

Comfort

At first glance, tampons can seem more uncomfortable than disposable pads. After all, pads don’t require the same effort that a tampon does.

But while tampons entail a learning curve in the beginning, many people actually find them more comfortable in the long run. This is because, for many women, tampons are less likely to irritate the skin. A lot of sanitary pads contain synthetics and chemicals that can trigger allergies or itchiness, especially when left on too long.

For others, the comfort comes from the fact that tampons are just more secure. The adhesive on pads can come off due to physical movement, which can lead to messiness and leaking.

Activity Level

If you lead a rather active lifestyle, then using a pad may not be for you. While pads provide a decent level of security as you’re moving around, most tampons are far less likely to get dislodged even when you’re busy playing sports, going to the gym, or dancing.

Eco-friendliness

Applicator-free tampons, or those with a biodegradable plastic or cardboard applicator, are considered eco-friendly period products compared to disposable pads. If you’re conscious about your waste and concerned about the amount of disposables you throw away, tampons are the clear winner.

There are also other zero-waste products that can help with your menstrual flow, including period underwear and reusable cups.

Choosing the right size

Before we get to the nitty gritty – aka how to actually insert a tampon – it’s important that you’re buying the right variety first.

There are so many types of tampons, which is great considering no two women have the same periods. I know people whose periods only last 2 days, while others can last up to a week.

Further, an important part of transitioning to tampon use is knowing your own menstrual cycle. You might already have an idea of this if you’ve been using pads, which also come in different shapes and sizes.

Tampon sizes vary according to flow heaviness. These sizes typically include: light (the lowest absorbency tampon for the start or end days where flow tends to be lighter), regular/normal (perfect for days with a very heavy flow), and super (reserved for exceptionally heavy period days).

How to insert a tampon inside your vaginal opening correctly

It can be incredibly nerve-wracking when it’s your first time inserting a tampon. The good news is that most products make tampon insertion quite simple once you get the hang of it. Let’s go over the exact steps on how to insert a tampon below.

1. Wash Your Hands

First things first: wash your hands. Expect to be doing a lot of hand-to-vagina contact, so you want to be 100% certain that your hands are not carrying any harmful bacteria that may be transferred onto your outer tube or vagina itself.

2. Locate the Vagina

If you’re unfamiliar with vaginal anatomy, that’s completely fine. But in order to get your tampon inside the right way, you’ll have to study your body pretty closely. For this step, we recommend taking a mirror and exploring the parts surrounding your vagina, including the vulva and labia.

If you’re having trouble locating your opening, try gently pulling the lips apart and feeling with your index finger for the opening. You’ll probably find it more quickly when you’re on your period, as this is where menstrual fluid comes out. Wash your hands as needed.

3. Get Your Tampon

Your first tampon will likely have to be one with an applicator, and you’ll see why. As you remove the tampon wrapper, you’ll notice a bullet-shaped piece of plastic or cardboard covering the tampon. Pull it open and you’ll find a smaller tube which will help you plunge the tampon inside.

4. Find a Comfortable Position

An immensely important part of this process is making sure you’re relaxed and comfortable. Most women find that sitting or squatting over the toilet works best for them. Another popular method is propping one leg over a tub or toilet seat. As long as you’re not squeezing your muscles down there and can reach the opening of your vaginal canal, you should be able to insert the tampon properly.

There’s no one way to hold a tampon correctly, so try experimenting with what works for you. Some prefer to grip the base with their index finger and thumb, others with their thumb and middle finger or even their index and middle finger.

5. Angle the Tip

Place the tip of your tampon right at your opening. Then, make sure you’re angling it towards your lower back and not straight up. The vaginal canal doesn’t go upwards, but is slightly angled towards our back.

6. Insert the Tampon

You’re finally ready to insert a tampon! Take a deep breath and slowly use your two fingers to push the tampon inside at the right angle. The applicator tip should be able to move snugly inside until only the base and the plunge or smaller tube at the bottom is visible and your hands are at your opening.

7. Plunge

Now, you’ll have to secure the tampon farther in. You can do this by positioning the base between your index finger and middle finger, and then slowly pushing the plunger until it’s flush with the base of the larger tube.

8. Take Out the Tampon Applicator

The final step is to slowly take out your applicator, leaving the tampon inside and revealing only the string hanging. And you’re done!

9. Move Around!

Once you’ve successfully inserted the tampon, you shouldn’t be able to feel it, for the most part. Try moving around or going about your day and see how comfortable you feel. If you’re worried about a leak, you can wear a light disposable pad or a pantyliner to avoid stains.

To remove the tampon, gently pull on the string attached to the end of the tampon. You should be able to pull it out of your vagina without any discomfort. Don’t forget – you should be removing tampons and replacing them every 6-8 hours. Make sure you’re wrapping your tampon with toilet paper before disposal.

While tampons are safe to use, you should not be experiencing unusual symptoms such as pain or fever. If this happens, remove the tampon immediately and contact your doctor for medical help.

Do tampons hurt the first time you use them?

Tampons should not be painful. However, if you’re inserting it into your vagina for the very first time, the sensation may feel foreign or even uncomfortable. You’re also likely to have to do it multiple times before getting it right, but once you get the hang of it, inserting a tampon will become second nature.

That said, there are three important factors that we must reiterate: first, your vagina must be well-lubricated (your menstrual blood offers natural lubrication); second, your tampon must be the right size; and third, you must be completely relaxed and comfortable in your position, whether it’s sitting or propping one foot up on an elevated surface.

Nevertheless, it shouldn’t be painful to wear tampons. If you experience any pain, fever, and other alarming symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Will I get toxic shock syndrome (TSS) from tampons?

One of the most common fears about using tampons is the risk of toxic shock syndrome or TSS.

TSS is a potentially fatal bacterial infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria infecting the body and releasing harmful toxins. This is a rare but life-threatening disease.

Fortunately, it is incredibly rare to get TSS as the FDA has since banned the materials and designs used in tampons that were associated with TSS.

To avoid any other form of vaginal infections, remember that you should never use a tampon for more than eight hours and always wash your hands thoroughly upon each reapplication.

Can you pee with a tampon in?

Yes! Pee comes out of a different opening than menstrual blood. However, many people still think you can’t pee when you have one in – this is a huge myth that needs to be dispelled.

Another myth is that tampons can get lost inside you. This is untrue! Even if the string breaks, your cervix acts as a block between the vagina and the uterus, so your tampon doesn’t really have anywhere to go.

Final Note

Not all period products are for everyone! Assess your lifestyle and see what suits you best. If you’re transitioning to tampons, then we hope this guide was helpful for you.

Reusable Menstrual Pads: Are They Worth the Hype?

Have you heard of a zero-waste period? It means using only plastic-free, reusable products during your cycle each month. It also means ditching the plastic-laden and chemical-laden disposable pads that not only contribute to the world’s plastic problem, but can also have a negative impact on our reproductive organs. And of course, it means making a huge switch, for the better!

Personally, I try going as close to zero-waste as I possibly can during my monthly cycle. That involves purchasing a reusable cup and a few reusable sanitary napkins, also known as pasadors. Making the switch takes commitment, but let me tell you that once I started, I never went back.

If you want to jump into the world of cloth pads and eco-friendly periods, then this guide is for you! Here’s everything you need to know about reusable menstrual pads.

What are reusable cloth menstrual pads?

Although disposable sanitary napkins are way more common nowadays, old rags and cloth pads were the norm for women centuries ago. It wasn’t until the 1800s that disposable pads were created due to rising demand. More women were working outside of the home, and their washable cloth pads just weren’t convenient or easy to use anymore.

In came disposable pads. The first prototypes were made by nurses who fashioned the pads out of a wood pulp because they were easy to just toss out after use.

Since then, menstrual pads have become more advanced and come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, absorbency levels, material, and even fragrances. There are night pads for heavier flows and day pads that are more lightweight. You can easily stick them onto your underwear, throw them away when they’re full, and never think twice about it. Disposable pads suited our needs in a fast-paced world.

The problem is the enormous plastic waste they produce. In the UK, the average user throws away 125 to 150 kilograms of disposable period products, including pads and tampons, in their lifetime. Multiply that by the number of people in the world who menstruate and use disposables. The damage to the environment is unthinkable.

Being a woman can be tough. The saying “Anything you can do, I can do bleeding” pretty much sums it up. It’s hard enough to go through scheduled physical and emotional duress every month, so of course we want to make the process as quick and convenient as we possibly can. But the earth is our home, and inflicting damage on mother nature is just as bad as inflicting damage to our own selves and our own womanhood.

Eco-friendly menstrual products have gained popularity because of this dilemma. Thankfully, there are now plenty of ways to take care of our body and the environment at the same time. The reusable menstrual pad is just one of them. Let’s head into all your burning questions about it!

Are reusable menstrual pads sanitary?

You might be wondering how sanitary it is to reuse a cloth pad. After all, our discharge, blood and all, isn’t exactly clean. Is washing truly enough to disinfect the pads, or are we setting ourselves up for a potential infection and vaginal disease?

The truth is, reusable pads are super safe, even more so than disposables. Not only that, but they can also lessen the many health risks found in disposable products.

Why should I switch to reusable sanitary pads?

Apart from containing a large amount of plastic that takes at least 500 years to degrade, disposable pads can become a health hazard to their users. One of the most common problems associated with them is bacterial infection. The synthetic material and super-absorbent nature of the pads can restrict airflow, trapping moisture and heat within the walls of the vagina which can eventually lead to yeast and bacterial growth.

Additionally, cotton pads (and even tampons) normally contain traces of the chemicals dioxin and bleach. Certain forms of these chemicals have been linked to cancer. Since the skin in the vagina is particularly thin, the risk of these toxins entering the bloodstream is high.

So what makes a reusable pad a safer alternative? For one thing, it uses a higher amount of natural, non-irritating materials. While not all reusable cloth pads are made from certified organic cotton, the cloth is less likely to cause rashes and discomfort the way disposable pads do. Furthermore, reusable cloth pads shy away from dangerous synthetic materials, making them more breathable.

How do you wash reusable menstrual pads?

We’ve pretty much established that cloth menstrual pads are safer than irritating disposable ones. But there are still a set of hygiene rules you need to follow when using reusable cloth pads, and you need to follow them closely.

Washing your cloth menstrual pads properly and thoroughly is the key. If you want them to last long, then you need to know how to treat them right.

Unlike disposable pads which require no aftercare, your cloth menstrual pads are going to be more high maintenance. But for all the benefits you’re getting out of them, we say they’re worth the time and effort.

Here are the things you need to keep in mind when washing your reusable pads:

Pre-wash brand new cloth pads with cold water.

Soak the reusable pad in cold water after your use, preferably with the pad facing down, as this reduces the likelihood of the blood settling into the pad. Do not expose your pad to hot water because the blood will stain!

After 30 minutes of soaking, rinse your pad in cold running water until the water turns clear. This is an indicator that most of the blood has been removed from the pad.

Now’s the time to wash your pad with soap. You may hand wash it, rubbing the pad onto itself. You may also clean your pad with a washing machine if you prefer, along with your other clothes or by itself.

Never use a fabric softener or bleach to clean your pad. The fabric softener will damage the absorbency.

Once you’re done washing the pad, hang it to air dry or sun dry. Pro-tip: the sun is a natural disinfectant!

Should you notice any stains on your pad even after consistent soaking and washing, don’t panic. Simply add a little baking soda (not baking powder) to combat the stains.

Do I have to wash my pad immediately after use?

A common misconception is that one has to wash their reusable pads immediately after use. That’s not actually the case! In fact, you can store your used day pads in a small pouch (some brands include them when you purchase your pads) and wash them all at night. Others wash their pads at the end of every cycle. Personally, it depends on your routine.

Part of integrating the use of these reusable pads into your everyday life is finding a routine that works for you. You can wash your pads along with the rest of your laundry or designate a specific day for just your pads. It all depends on you.

How long do reusable menstrual pads last?

A reusable cloth pad can last up to 5 years with proper care and maintenance, so make sure you’re willing to put in the work before you invest in them!

Are reusable pads worth it compared to disposable pads?

There are certain disadvantages that come with reusable pads. To give you the full idea of what you’re getting into, here are some struggles that users may encounter:

1. Clean-up

Cloth menstrual pads are certainly not as easy to maintain as disposable ones. If convenience is something that’s non-negotiable for you, then you might end up getting tired of having to wash your own period blood every cycle.

2. Budget

Reusable pads will actually save you more money in the long run, but you’ll need to shell out a lot of cash at the beginning. Financial accessibility is another problem when it comes to products such as these, and it’s why a large number of people prefer to buy disposables. In the short run, these disposables cost less.

3. No adhesive

A disposable pad contains an adhesive strip so you can easily stick it onto your underwear and move freely without worrying about leaks. While leaks aren’t a huge problem when it comes to reusables, you might be surprised that they don’t have an adhesive at the bottom!

A reusable pad instead offers wings that clasp at the crotch area to secure it to the lining of your undies. This makes the product easier to reposition during use, but it also means that it can move around a little bit.

How to Choose the Right Cloth Pads for You

Let’s say you’re ready to make the switch — hooray! Now, all that’s left is to choose which reusable pads you should go for. Remember that these pads will be your period partners for a long time, so choose wisely.

Just like a disposable pad, reusable period products have different absorbency levels. The average period lasts 2 to 8 days, and the flow usually varies from lighter to heavier. The most sensible thing to do is to choose products that have different absorbency levels to match the variations of your flow.

There are pantyliners for those who like to use their pads as back-up layers of protection when using cups. To help you make the right choice, here are the kinds of reusable products you’ll encounter and who they could benefit the most.

1. Pantyliners

Like we mentioned, pantyliners are great for those who just need the additional layers of protection when they’re already using other products, such as cups or tampons. They’re thinner and less absorbent, making them more suitable for spotting days.

2. Day-use Pads

Women who feel more comfortable using pads with a standard absorbency ought to go for day-use pads. These are the ones that provide an effective layer of protection for a moderate flow. They’re a lot more breathable than night pads.

3. Night Pads

Finally, those who tend to have heavier flows or are prone to leaking at the back should try night-use pads. This product usually offers the most protection and absorbency, which is why some people prefer to use one over standard pads.

Final Note

Like we said, being a woman is tough! At the end of the day, the way you choose to take care of your period and the rest of your body is your own choice. But with more research coming out about the harmful impact of disposables to the environment and our own health, the better option is clear as day.

Menstrual Cup: Should You Use It?

Did you know that one single plastic napkin could take 500 to 800 years to decompose, according to Down to Earth India? Statistics such as the ones included in the article have pushed many women and girls to switch to more eco-friendly ways of handling their red days. That’s where menstrual cups come in. On the surface, they’re a wonderful waste-free alternative to wasteful disposable napkins.

There are plenty of misconceptions surrounding menstrual cups, especially for us girls who were taught that anything that goes inside our lady parts is inherently harmful or indecent.

But that’s not at all the case! In fact, there are plenty of great reasons to switch to reusable cups. Plenty of girls get allergic reactions to sanitary napkins and tampons due to their shock absorbent material. They also have a pretty short lifespan, which isn’t always the most convenient for girls who have busy lifestyles.

Thinking of making the zero-waste switch? We’re here to give you all the needed information on menstrual cups. Let’s take a look at its pros, cons, and everything in between!

Why should you use a menstrual cup?

Honestly, when I first heard about menstrual cups, it seemed like a crazy idea too. Seeing ads for a popular brand like the Lily Cup had confused me at first. If you’ve been raised in a somewhat conservative household like me, our knowledge of sanitary hygiene and how our reproductive organ works is probably somewhat limited. In other words, any feminine hygiene products that had to be lodged in your vagina, including tampons, were deemed either unsafe or just plain gross.

But the inventor of these cups, Leona Chalmers, intended them to be more than that. There are plenty of benefits to using cups. Let’s take a look at them!

You’re putting your health and safety first

Menstrual cups are completely safe to use. Much safer, in fact, than our usual disposable napkins. Since they collect fluid in the cup rather than absorb them like pads and tampons do, you’re reducing your risk of getting toxic shock syndrome.

TSS is a disease, potentially fatal, that can happen to menstruating women who wear super-absorbent tampons or pads. Menstrual cups don’t contain the same toxins found in disposables, such as bleach and dioxin.

Menstrual cups are made from medical grade silicone or latex rubber, which makes them flexible while also completely reusable. Fans of the product report fewer cramps, although this is anecdotal.

Getting TSS when wearing a menstrual cup is incredibly rare. The most irritation you’ll probably get from the cup is from first-time use or purchasing the wrong size. More on that later.

You’re helping save the planet

The rising awareness of our environmental footprint has led to a boom in the use of eco-friendly lifestyle changes. Whether it’s our food, strawless coffee cups, or even our periods, there are boundless alternatives that can help us minimize the waste we dispose of on a daily basis. Which is a lot.

Sanitary pads are particularly devious because they take so long to decompose, filling up landfills, and their very nature requires continuous disposal. A tampon also takes years, even the ones that have a wooden applicator. The Women’s Environmental Network documents an average of 11,000 disposable menstrual products used by menstruating women in the UK throughout their lifetime. Given the country’s population, that’s around 200,000 tons of plastic waste each year from these disposables alone.

The Philippines is also one of the world’s largest ocean polluters, and our landfills are quickly piling up. Switching to reusable hygiene products is just one of the billion ways we can lessen contributing to this waste.

They’re less high-maintenance

You might think that because napkins are disposable that they’re more convenient. Sure, you can throw them away after using them and never think twice about it.

But what about the effort it takes to clean up leaks on a particularly heavy cycle? Or the inconvenience of having to interrupt your meeting, lunch out, or date to go change in the nearest stall?

These are just a few worries that switching to a reusable cup can eliminate. This is because a menstrual cup can stay inside your body for up to 12 hours on an average flow. With a cup, you very rarely have to change in the middle of the day. It can collect your body’s discharge for longer, unlike disposable pads that have to be managed every 4 hours. It’s also less likely to leak, as the cup sits just under your cervix and can catch the discharge before it has a chance to leak.

Plus, cups can be way more comfortable than pads! If you’re someone who performs a lot of physical activities during the day, a cup can let you freely move about without worrying about leaks.

How to Use a Menstrual Cup

Now, if you’re already aware of all of that and are struggling to use your menstrual cup, have no fear! There’s a learning period when it comes to these babies, but they’re worth it, so don’t give up on them.

Our vaginas, including the canal and cervix, all vary somewhat in shape and size. This means the correct position of the cup will also vary from person to person. Some people have a higher cervix, so the cup has to go farther in. The reverse goes for those who have a lower cervix.

Which fold should I use with my menstrual cups?

The most common fold is the C-fold, which is simply forming a C-shape with the tip of the cup. To do this, press the cup to make it flat, then fold it once.

Other women may find this too large to be comfortable in their vagina, in which case they can use alternatives like the punch-down fold, which is considered the fold with the smallest insertion point. All you have to do is fold one tip down instead of flat like the above, and then fold the cup in half. You should end up with a really small c-shaped tip.

Another favored cup fold is the 7-fold method. Instead of folding your cup in half, flatten it and fold the right tip down to the left stem. This cup fold is great for those who may be struggling with the removal process, as it allows the cup to break the suction seal much easier. If you want it to be smaller, simply fold it twice to achieve the double 7-fold.

Can I use a menstrual cup if I’m still a virgin?

Absolutely! It’s a common misconception that if you haven’t had sexual intercourse that it’s impossible to use a menstrual cup or even a tampon. As long as you are properly lubricated, be it with water or a lubricant, then rest assured you’ll be able to use a menstrual cup just fine. There are a few things to note, though.

The best way to ease yourself into using a menstrual cup for the first time is getting to know your parts better. Take some time to locate where your cervix is situated. If you can insert a finger, the cervix should feel like the tip of your nose.

You should also make sure you’re relaxed when trying to insert a menstrual cup because tension can make your vagina tighten.

Now that we’re done with the preparation stage, here are the steps on how to successfully use a menstrual cup:

1. Wash Your Hands

By this point in the global pandemic, we should all be crazy hand washers. Washing your hands before inserting them or touching anything you’ll be inserting into your coochie is not only sanitary, but can prevent serious bacterial infections from happening.

2. Get Comfy

Some are more comfortable while sitting and others standing up or squatting. Your preferences might not be apparent on the first try, but that’s okay! Try out different positions to see which way you’re most comfortable with. Remember that there’s a learning curve which requires patience. Take a deep breath and get comfortable.

3. Lubricate

One thing that differentiates tampons and napkins from menstrual cups is that the latter is made of silicone. These silicone cups require some lubrication in the vagina in order to properly insert. For some people, lubrication from the blood is enough for comfortable insertion. If it’s not the case for you, try wetting the cup with water when you’re in the shower or using a store-bought lubricant. When all else fails, some people recommend simply using your vagina’s own lubrication and touching yourself in order to make the insertion process easier.

4. Fold ‘em and Hold ‘em

We’ve mentioned three basic cup folds above: the c-fold cup method, punch-down cup fold, and the 7-fold. We’ll leave it to you to decide which one is your favorite!

5. Insertion in the Vagina

Make sure to hold the cup firmly and guide it rim-first into your opening, moving it towards the small of your back rather than pushing it upwards. You should be able to feel a pop inside, a sign that your menstrual cup has successfully opened.

To check that the suction is working, simply run a finger around the rim of the cup to see if it’s fully opened and there are no folds. You may also try rotating your cup. If it moves, that means your cup isn’t fully opened and needs to be adjusted or re-inserted.

Depending on the design of different brands, there should be less of an inch of stem showing. Other designs can have a longer stem or a shorter one. Once again, each user will have varying experiences! If you’re uncomfortable with your cup’s stem length, one of the recommended solutions is to trim it.

6. Wearing

You can wear menstrual cups for 12 hours as well as overnight. The amount of times you’ll have to wash it during the day will vary on your own flow.

7. Take It Off

They say with a menstrual cup, you either struggle most with the insertion or the removal. In my case, inserting it was a pain but boy, did removal feel easy. But don’t just go about pulling the cup down because that’s going to hurt. Instead, squeeze the bottom of the cup to gently break the suction. Good brands should have a strong suction that is also easy to remove.

Make sure your pulling motion is gradual so you don’t spill the fluid all over yourself. Gently tip the fluid into the toilet. By this point, you can clean your cup with cold water and soap, then sterilize it with hot water. Make sure to clean your cup before and after use!

Disadvantages of a Menstrual Cup

Of course, a product like this isn’t all pros. Despite its innovativeness in terms of women’s wellness and hygiene, there are a few disadvantages that come along with it. Healthline lists three: irritation, infection, and toxic shock syndrome.

Keep in mind that these dangers are significantly rarer in a menstrual cup than they are in disposable hygiene products like napkins and tampons. Specifically, there has only ever been one reported case of TSS due using a menstrual cup.

Another disadvantage is simply the mode of operation. Some girls just don’t want an internal apparatus, and that’s totally okay! If you’re uncomfortable with the idea of inserting a cup into your vagina during your period but still want to remain eco-conscious, a reusable pad might be your solution.

Commonly known as a pasador, a reusable pad is a great alternative to menstrual cups for certain people. However, the difference in convenience is glaring as reusable pads are harder to maintain than disposables.

Plus, application is inherently hard with a menstrual cup. Some just don’t get over the learning curve. I myself took a few cycles just to be able to put it in correctly, and even then, it was prone to minor leakage because the suction was faulty. Those with a heavy flow are also going to have to remove and reinsert their cups more often.

That said, if you think the advantages of a menstrual cup far outweigh the cons, then you’re in for a wonderful waste-free journey!
