With diapers to buy, mouths to feed, and toys to wrap, most moms simply don’t have enough wiggle room in their budget to splurge on themselves. But one of the main things we love to promote on here is affordable fashion, that you don’t have to spend 5,000 pesos or more on a great outfit. Remember, being frugal doesn’t necessarily mean your OOTDs will look cheap.
Here’s how to be a fashionable mommy for less:
Get Your Craft On
Maybe you love to sew. Maybe you love a good DIY project in your spare time. If you enjoy arts and crafts, then you should definitely get into wardrobe refashioning. What that is is basically taking old clothes and breathing new life into them by changing their silhouette, adding new details, generally making any changes to make your wardrobe new again. It could be as simple as turning a men’s polo into a basic loose tee, or as advanced as turning jeans you’ve outgrown into a tote or a patchwork chambray shirt. It doesn’t matter what old clothes you’ve got, there’s at least five different projects you can do for your raggedy plaid shirt and last year’s impulse buy that you never EVER wear. You could even turn old bed sheets, linens, or whatever fabrics you have around the house, into an array of tops, shorts and skirts, perhaps some dresses and pants if you have plenty of fabric to go around. You could even make some clothes for your little ones!
If you need more wardrobe refashioning ideas, Pinterest is definitely a helpful resource, though YouTube and Instagram are also great networks for DIY projects.
Be Thrifty
We all understand the temporary nature of trends, and while a truly efficient shopper invests in basics and classics that will stand the test of time, we can’t help but give into the trends of the present moment. Humans are curious creatures after all.
However, what ends up happening when we experiment with such fleeting fads is that we spend more than what we bargained for, only to donate it or hand it down to a family member because we simply lost interest in the trends.
To avoid wasting all that money, shop at your favorite ukay-ukay. You’ll find all the latest trends there at extremely affordable prices, so if you end up hating the cold shoulder silhouette a few months from now, you can at least take comfort in the fact that you spent a couple hundred pesos or less on the blouse. Plus, you could always refashion it into a new top.
Find Inspo on Instagram
Creativity can run a little low when you’ve been staring at the same wardrobe, with no new buys from the year to excite or inspire an amazing ensemble for the day. Sometimes, all you need to get those creative juices flowing is by scrolling through Instagram. Though the OOTDs on social media influencers definitely cost more than your monthly groceries, that does not mean you have to spend that much to create a similar outfit. Besides, it’s not about completely mimicking what you see in their posts; it’s about taking what you see and using that as a basis on how you can change things up with your existing wardrobe. You could even borrow from your husband’s or partner’s closet, turning his tees and shirts into dresses with a small addition of a waist belt if you love playing around with menswear.
Who needs a completely new wardrobe when all you really need is a new perspective on your clothes?
Compare Prices Online
Before buying anything in store, make sure you do a price comparison online. Prices can very between physical and online retailers, so it’s best to do your research for the greatest savings. And if the name isn’t all that important to you, there are tons of affordable brands out there that have similar silhouettes and designs as high street labels. You’ve probably seen a ton of celebrities donning fabulous faux fur coats when they jet set around the world to winter wonderlands, but rather than shopping where they shop for winter gear, a quick search online will show that you can get essentially the same style coats for much less. Pretty Me has got a ton of options all under 2K, such as the Long Faux Fur Coat, the Elegant Faux Fur Vest Coat, as well as this Faux Fur Winter Coat.
That’s all for today, folks! Let us know if you have any other budget mommy fashion tips that we might have missed!
