5 FASHION TRENDS TO DITCH IN 2019
It’s a new year, which means it’s time to cleanse and let go of grudges, bad vibes and questionable trends. 2018 brought equal amounts of hits and misses, all popularized by celebrities and social media influencers alike for better or for worse, but what else can we expect when designers introduce new concepts or revive old fads? Not everything they create is going to survive through the seasons, or at least be well received.
Obviously, there’s no shame in trying out new trends. After all, everything deserves to be experimented with at least once, as you’ll never know unless you experience it for yourself.
We all have varying tastes in style, though there are some things we just don’t want to see anymore in 2019. They might have been good for 2018, but it’s definitely time for us to let them go.
Here’s everything you should be saying goodbye to this year:
1.Tiny Sunglasses
2018 was the year that everyone fell back in love, with the ’90s with exception of Gen Z who were just discovering the decade. While we’re thankful for revivals such as cat eye glasses, we are totally over the tiny sunglasses. Over the years, people have made questionable decisions with shades, such as wearing them indoors and at night (why do celebrities insist on wearing sunglasses when there is no sun to shield their eyes?), and last year, they brought back the tiny sunnies. They definitely only work for certain face shapes, plus they make you look like you were playing dress up with your kid sister or cousin.
They served no purpose in the ’90s, and they serve no purpose to us now.
2. Extremely Long and Tight Ponytails
Ariana Grande is the queen of the high slick ponytail, but she even said so herself that she wears her hair like so (with extensions) because her tresses are permanently damaged from dying it red every other week during her Nickelodeon days. Having that much hair, whether your own or as extensions, is difficult to maintain, not to mention heavy. Also, having it pulled back really tight like that can’t be good for your roots. There are tons of other hairstyles out there that are just as sleek without it damaging your locks or literally weighing you down.
3. Plastic Shoes
What is with the fashion industry’s obsession with clear plastic? A couple years back, we were introduced to plastic knee denim and full plastic “jeans,” as highlighted in The Worst Things to Happen to Denim in 2017, only to be followed by clear shoes a year later. Your feet naturally get sweaty in footwear, and the thought of seeing someone’s shoes fogging up is totally off-putting. Fair enough that probably didn’t happen for Kim Kardashian or Beyoncé when they sported transparent mules, though the same cannot be said for those who wore clear boots. Also, who wears boots without socks?!
Additionally, you have to make sure your feet are perfectly polished and pedicured, which is a nightmare for anyone who is low maintenance.
There are loads of different ways to pull off the barely there shoe, as proven by these nude High Heel Block Sandals. And sure, plastic is great for rain boots, but it’s not the only material to go for when you’re searching for waterproof shoes. Classic wellies are not the only options, as items like these Military Lace-up Boots can be worn on rainy days too.
4. Small Handbags
Kudos to any woman that can step out of the house with just their phone. As for everyone else, tiny handbags are pretty useless. Clutches don’t really count, since you don’t need much when you’re headed to a formal event. We’re focusing more on the everyday bag.
Smartphones make it possible today to go shopping without a wallet, but not all necessities have been digitized. Some like to carry makeup everywhere they go, others carry their journals and pens and such, so explain to us how you can fit everything you need on the day-to-day in a bag that contains just enough space for your phone and wallet, and maybe your lip balm?
5. Bike Shorts
The last thing that needs to go is bike shorts in daily wear. That’s not to say that we should eliminate items like these Haimie Cycling Shorts all together; it’s more about limiting them to their intended use, which is obviously cycling. Reality stars, YouTubers and Instagram models alike are wearing them as alternatives to leggings, and in all honestly, they just look like they’re wearing shapewear. They’re great for wearing underneath skirts and dresses when you’re conscious of unintended flashing, though other than that, bike shorts should only be worn when athletics are involved.
